Red Nose Company celebrates its 20th anniversary by staging a Swedish-language performance for adults for the first time. The renowned professional theatre, specialising in theatre clownery, has been performing in Finnish since 2005. Strömsö offers an escape from reality and happy endings, and in this performance, the clowns also sing opera for the first time in the history of the Red Nose Company. The play will premiere on May 13 at Lilla Teatern, where it will be performed five times before going on tour in the fall of 2025.
“This new project will expand our operations and audience base in a fantastic way,” says Executive Director Liisa Ruuskanen. “We hope that the performance will bring together new audiences and those who already know us.”
Strömsö is a joyful musical theatre performance about everything that is wrong – in life, society and fiction. Now the escape from reality is turned into an art form: the unfortunate endings of stories are corrected and a new, brave world is created, where everything goes as it did on Strömsö! Or does it?
The director is Marielle Eklund-Vasama, whose previous clown show Babylon (2018) was a hit with audiences and critics. “I love happy endings! Since the theme is escape from reality, you also have to take a stand on reality – what are we fleeing from and why? The best way is to let two clowns take care of it and see what happens,” says Eklund-Vasama.
On stage, we see the singing actors Stella Laine and Marika Westerling, who are both making their debut in Red Nose Company. Directed by Marielle Eklund-Vasama, composer and live musician Petri Tiainen, costume design by Reija Laine.
The play borrows freely from well-known classics and for the first time in the Red Nose Company’s 20-year history, we also get to hear clowns sing opera.
Red Nose Company is a professional theatre founded in 2005, specialising in theatre clownery. The theatre’s area of operation is the whole of Finland: Red Nose Company is a touring theatre that operates without its own stage. There are 100–200 performances annually, and 20,000–30,000 spectators. Red Nose Company collaborates with Finland’s most important theatre houses and also tours cultural centres, schools, service homes and events. In recent years, the activities have also expanded abroad.
Red Nose Company has previously given two children’s performances in Swedish: Frankenstein (2021) and The Emperor’s New Clothes (2017).
Strömsö, premiere on 13.5.2025 at Lilla Teatern, Yrjönkatu 30, 00100 Helsinki. The performance is a guest performance at Lilla Teatern: 13.5, 15.5, 16.5, 20.5 and 21.5.2025. On tour from autumn 2025.
