Ken Ludwig’s comedy hit A Comedy of Tenors (2015), set in the world of opera, will have its Nordic premiere on the Arena stage of the Helsinki City Theatre on 8 February. Directed by Jaakko Saariluoma and starring top comedians, the novelty offers an evening full of pure joy.

We are in Paris in the 1930s and the grand stadium gig of three tenors is just about to begin. The ambitious manager does his best to keep the strings in his hands and get all three artists on stage on time. This is not quite simple, as the hotel suite can also accommodate a number of wives and girlfriends, misunderstandings and jealousy, as well as a surprisingly familiar hotel porter. The result is a dizzying series of confusion that is not lacking in laughter, music or love.

In the whirlwind of events, there is a convincing cast: Riitta Havukainen, Jonna Järnefelt, Oona Airola, Taneli Mäkelä, Iikka Forss, Eero Saarinen and Santeri Kinnunen.

Set designer Katariina Kirjavainen’s stage design serves as a continuation of the architecture of the venue, the Arena House, completed in 1929. The costumes for the play, which is set in the artistic world of the 1930s, were designed by Sari Salmela. Jutta Kainulainen and Taina Tervo are responsible for the disguise and hairstyles. The world of lights was designed by Kari Leppälä and the sounds by Eradj Nazimov. The play has been translated into Finnish by Reita Lounatvuori.

Jaakko Saariluoma, known as a stand-up comedian, actor, screenwriter, director and presenter, is now visiting the Helsinki City Theatre for the first time as a director. On the HKT stage, he has previously been seen in the plays Paavo 1.5 (2008) and Ihmisosa (2011), as well as in Studio Pasila’s popular stand-up evenings Club act!one.
