The enchanting Disney musical The Little Mermaid will return to the Helsinki City Theatre’s repertoire in autumn 2023. The re-premiere will take place on the big stage on 17 August.
The Little Mermaid originally premiered on the big stage of the Helsinki City Theatre on 29 August 2019. The musical, which has been a huge success with audiences and received rave reviews, is directed by Samuel Harjanne.
“I’m so happy that The Little Mermaid is swimming back to the Helsinki City Theatre! This production is special even on an international level, considering the possibilities of few art institutions to visually realize such an abundant fantasy world. This inspires new generations to theatre and enables them to relive the holistic experience,” says director Samuel Harjanne.
The Little Mermaid offers stunning visuals and magically beautiful music. It’s a fascinatingly wonderful, timeless love story in which the young mermaid Ariel wants to leave the maritime kingdom and live in a human world.
“Due to the coronavirus, we had to cancel more than 30 sold-out performances of The Little Mermaid from the spring of 2020 and another 50 additional performances from the 2020–2021 season. We definitely wanted to save the performance, find a new time for it and once again offer the audience the opportunity to experience this amazingly high-quality and top-quality theatre experience for the whole family. I’m also looking forward to seeing the performance again!”, says theatre director Kari Arffman.
Once again, the stage will feature amazing flight technology, puppets from the makers of the Star Wars films, Rococo-inspired costumes designed by Pirjo Liiri-Majava, Peter Ahlqvist’s stunning set, video projections designed by Toni Haaranen, and Gunilla Olsson-Karlsson’s demanding and spectacular choreographies. The casting of the cast of the musical will be announced on 14 February.
Based on H. C. Andersen’s classic fairy tale (1837) and the beloved Disney animation (1989), the Disney musical The Little Mermaid (2008) is written by Doug Wright, composed by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater.
Alan Menken’s enchanting music once made this Disney film one of the biggest successes in the world. For the musical, he has composed more than 10 new songs, including the hits Part Of Your World, and the Oscar-winning Under the Sea.
The re-premiere of The Little Mermaid musical on 17.8.2023 on the big stage of the Helsinki City Theatre (Eläintarhantie 5).
