The Little Mermaid has been directed by Samuel Harjanne, who has recently gained a huge reputation among musicals. Solid expertise really shows in the end result! The story progresses smoothly, the whole thing is controlled in every way and absolutely entertaining. It is easy to immerse yourself in the story and forget about everyday life.

Broadway and the West End, shake! A world-class Disney musical will be performed in Hakaniemi, Helsinki. Yasmine Yamajako is the charming and peppery mermaid Ariel, Aleksi Johansson is the funny and skilled little fish Splash and Sanna Saarijärvi is the perfectly scary sea witch Ursula. The singing is wonderfully loud and the magic of the fairy tale is contagious, although it is a vain hope that the prince and princess will not end up getting married head-on.

Summer is coming to an end, but that just means it’s time to open a wonderful cultural autumn! And it couldn’t have started more magnificently, as this week we got to see the re-premiere of The Little Mermaid at the Helsinki City Theatre.

Often, after an impressive theatrical performance, you sigh that you should see this again. In practice, however, that dream usually remains just a daydream after the final applause, because there are so few free evenings and so many interesting theatre performances in life that there is no time for repeat rounds. Except once in a while.

Last week I was in Helsinki for a couple of days on a ventilation and theater trip. In the previous post, there is a story about the play Angry Widow, the premiere of which I was able to attend in cooperation with the Helsinki City Theatre. Another performance I went to see on my trip to Helsinki was the musical The Little Mermaid also at the Helsinki City Theatre. I had bought a ticket for this already in the spring.

Oops, it’s autumn! It’s pretty wonderful to come back here to tell you what’s going on, starting with the musical The Little Mermaid, which we got to experience this weekend. Two media tickets were received for the performance, the rest of the company’s tickets were purchased as usual.

On HKT’s hill, families, young and old, mothers, fathers, grandfathers, and enthusiastic starry-eyed girls and boys escape the rain indoors. And one cynical thirty-five-year-old who, due to his work stress, wondered if this Disney’s Finnishized magic could break this incipient autumn blues. Well, the blues was replaced by Alan Menken’s classic tunes, which bring a smile to your face for many reasons. (Sometimes I’ll explain musically why Part of your world is such a good song.) The original Little Mermaid was released when I was five years old. The girl next door had a VHS of it, and I borrowed it from her all the time; when he got bored, I took 80% of my weekly allowance to a nearby R-kioski, which always borrowed the same video for a few days at a time. At the age of 12, I got my first Ariel toys, my favorite was a seashell that bubbled in the bathtub with the help of a bubble tablet. (How many 12-year-olds buy effervescent tablets with their weekly allowance?)

So when the calypsophobia of The Little Mermaid starts playing in the Waves, the memories take you back to your own daughters’ childhood at the turn of the millennium. We watched Disney’s The Little Mermaid video, listened to a fairy tale tape and played with Ariel Barbie. The smaller one chose the Ariel cap when you could only get one product from the Disney store.

After all, I was expecting something great. I knew that the costumes were wonderful and the set design was ambitious, that The Little Mermaid was the biggest musical at the Helsinki City Theatre. For the first ten minutes or so, I watched with admiration how wonderfully the undersea world has been created, how the mermaids tremendously wag their tails and hands, and how smoothly the stage moves from under the sea to the surface.

Director Samuel Harjanne and the musical’s huge crew had created such a dazzling fairy tale on stage that reality became blurred. The brain played tricks, the whole mind and body were pulled into another dimension for a moment. To the realm of imagination.

Visually, The Little Mermaid is probably the most handsome theatre ever seen in Finland. Spectacular (and funny!) crowd scenes are marched onto the stage with buckles: sailors, rococo gentlemen, kitchen staff, an army of seagulls. There are video projections, wow experiences, magic. Endless silk and different shades of turquoise.

The premiere of The Little Mermaid musical was celebrated at the Helsinki City Theatre on 29.8.2019! With the wave of a magic wand, two young people appeared on stage, struggling with the tight grip of their parents’ values. One is tempted to abandon sailing at sea, while another is tempted to live on land. The young people fall in love with each other in the collision of these two worlds. At first, Erik is so enchanted that he can’t see beyond his nose. He is only looking for a mystical voice when he should be listening to the whole. He learns to trust the language of movement together with Ariel.

The absolute queen of the spectacle of the season is here! I dare say so, even though autumn has barely begun yet. The director of The Little Mermaid, Samuel Harjanne, emphasizes the content of the work in the script: “—Both Ariel’s body and the world around her prevent her from being who she is. This resonates with the modern world
and genders, and is the most important theme of the musical.”

“It’s great to see major productions like The Little Mermaid right here in my hometown, and they don’t lose to big Broadway productions on any level. The sets, costumes and dance numbers build the performance as much as the actors themselves. The wonderfully constructed underwater world, the mermaid who actually swims in the water, i.e. floats in the air, and the hide-and-seek between the kitchen staff and the crab, have been built with skill and ambition.”

Like so many children of the 90s, Disney’s The Little Mermaid has a big place in my heart. Disney’s movie musicals have had a big impact on my falling in love with musicals, and The Little Mermaid is no exception, even though I never owned it on VHS. I borrowed the cassette from the library whenever possible and brushed the red hair of my Ariel Barbies, hoping to own the same ones myself. As a teenager, I also actively followed the stage version landing on Broadway, because, well, I followed any Broadway news at the time. I listened to the recording of the musical often and even tapped through one bootleg. That’s why seeing the Helsinki City Theatre’s production was a no-brainer for me, but at the same time, I thought I knew what awaited me. I was wrong.

Right at the beginning of the performance, I notice that a permanent smile sticks to my face. The viewer is led into a charming underwater world filled with dance, song and colorful sea creatures. Cheerful and impressive musical numbers follow one another, but those familiar with the story know that there are also less blissful moments in store. The musical is not an identical copy of the film, and many new songs and surprising solutions are heard in the theatre hall. Visually, the performance is pleasing to the eye, and different milieus – such as the Kingdom of Triton and the castle’s kitchen – are excellently executed.

A week ago, a friend and I went to see a new, wonderful performance at the Helsinki City Theatre (later HKT): The Little Mermaid. Tickets to the performance were given to us as cooperation tickets, a big thank you for that. I had to give myself time to digest what I had seen, it was so wonderful that now I can only write. Basically, the story is probably familiar to many, so I won’t go into the plot or go into it here, but I’ll focus more on what I saw on stage.

Theatre as a genre is in a tight spot. In an age where home receivers cover the end wall of the living room and the surrounding screens capture the viewer’s grip, theatres must also try to rise to the challenge in order to meet the needs of an increasingly experience-seeking audience. And with it, the stands on the big stages.

The myth of the mermaid who wants to become a human being, familiar in many cultures, has found its way into opera – including Dvorák’s Rusalka – as well as literature and, through H.C. The Little Mermaid is guaranteed to be the main attraction of the Helsinki City Theatre. The production has been expensive and the result is a dazzlingly spectacular spectacle. Thanks to modern technology, the whole is so genuinely set in the sea that it is easy for the viewer to experience the underwater nature of the events. There are many seemingly impossible tricks offered to the small and slightly older viewers. How on earth does Ariel swim from the bottom of the sea up towards the ceiling of the stage and in the next moment she is down on a rock, the surface of the sea on the floor of the stage? And how realistically the three-dimensional jellyfish flocks rise towards the surface.
