Satu Rämö’s popular crime series returns to the stage. Based on the second (Rósa & Björk, WSOY 2023) and third (Jakob, WSOY 2023) instalments in the book series, the new thriller Rósa & Björk will premiere at the Arena Stage on 30 January. Based on the first instalment, Hildur was staged at the Arena Stage in spring 2026 and was a hit with audiences. Elena Leeve returns as Hildur, with Paavo Kinnunen as Jakob.
A body is discovered in Iceland’s Westfjords, then another. Verses from an Icelandic Christmas poem left at the crime scenes put Hildur (Elena Leeve) and her partner Jakob (Paavo Kinnunen) on the trail of a serial killer. As the investigation progresses, Hildur realises that the murders are somehow connected to her own past and the mystery of her younger sisters, Rósa and Björk, who disappeared 30 years ago. Could the questions that have haunted Hildur for decades finally be answered? Who is behind the Christmas murders, and how is the mystery connected to Hildur?
“Rósa & Björk is a gripping murder mystery in which two separate storylines gradually begin to intertwine. Hildur uncovers increasingly compelling clues about her own trauma and becomes convinced that the killer knows something about it. The killer must be caught if the fate of her younger sisters is ever to be revealed,” says director Tuomas Parkkinen.
The play continues the Nordic blue style of Hildur, once again creating a striking visual world on stage. Together with its tense plot and brilliant cast, it promises audiences a powerful crime thriller experience.
“Producing a sequel for the stage is both rare and unique. Although Rósa & Björk picks up where the previous play, Hildur, left off, it is a standalone work. Audiences do not need to have read Rämö’s books or seen the first instalment to follow the story,” Parkkinen emphasises.
“It feels extraordinary to see Hildur’s story continue on stage. Last spring’s production of Hildur and the enthusiastic response it received at Helsinki City Theatre are still deeply moving. That makes it all the more wonderful that the story is being continued in this way at the theatre. I am delighted that Elena Leeve as Hildur and Paavo Kinnunen as Jakob will once again take to the stage in the leading roles,” says author Satu Rämö.
Alongside Elena Leeve and Paavo Kinnunen, the cast includes Helena Haaranen, Sanna-June Hyde, Eeva Kaihola, Sohvi Roininen, Sanna Saarijärvi, Sauli Suonpää and Leenamari Unho.
The play has been adapted by Satu Rasila from Satu Rämö’s original works and is directed by Tuomas Parkkinen. The dramaturg is Ari-Pekka Lahti. Set design is by Antti Mattila, costume design by Elina Kolehmainen and make-up design by Jutta Kainulainen. Petteri Heiskanen is responsible for lighting design and Toni Haaranen for video design. The music and sound design are by Aleksi Saura.
