The theatre performance of The Angry Widow will be broadcast live around Sweden

Vanhempi nainen ja mies syleilevät ja hymyilevät iloisesti lavalla, kun kaksi muuta ihmistä seisoo taustalla; kohtaus näyttää olevan osa teatteriesitystä.

The theatre performance of The Angry Widow will be broadcast live from the main stage of the Helsinki City Theatre to 24 cinemas, cultural centres and community centres around Sweden. The live broadcast will be carried out in cooperation with the Swedish National Touring Theatre Riksteatern and the Folkets Hus och Parker network on 22 November.

“We have previously toured Sweden with Riksteater for two smaller performances, and now it’s great to try out a completely new kind of collaboration for us and also have a performance on the big stage available to the Swedish audience. A live broadcast is a cost-effective way to present Finnish theatre art also next door, and in the case of performances on the big stage, it is also the only way,” says Theatre Director Kari Arffman.

The Angry Widow is based on the novel of the same name by Minna Lindgren (2018), and it is dramatised by Henna Piirto and directed by Kimmo Virtanen. The play, starring Riitta Havukainen , premiered on the big stage of HKT a month ago on 10 October. The life-like drama comedy is recognizably about the most growing age group in Finland, those over 70 years old.

The satellite broadcast of The Angry Widow (Arga Änkka) will be subtitled in Swedish and Finnish. The audience in 24 locations around Sweden will be largely Finnish-speaking audiences, but also other Swedish theatre audiences who appreciate Finnish theatre.

“Our digitalization project aims to convey a performance that takes place ‘here and now’ without losing the intensity of a live performance. With the live performance of The Angry Widow , we are expanding it to the event ‘there and now’. The collaboration with the City Theatre will make this performance available to our organisers in all its glory,” says Dritëro Kasapi, Director of Riksteatern.

The live broadcast of The Angry Widow is part of Riksteatern’s three-year Scenkonst 3.0 project, supported by the Swedish government, which aims to increase the accessibility of theatre and performing arts in Sweden. Riksteatern is cooperating with various Nordic institutions in connection with the project, and the most active cooperation is with Finland.

The last time Helsinki City Theatre collaborated with Riksteatern was in connection with the Swedish tour of President Kekkonen’s play Sylvi and Anita in 2014 and Helsinki Dance Company’s XPSD dance performance on its Swedish tour in 2010.

Riksteatern is a non-profit cultural association with a total of 40,000 dedicated members. Riksteatern’s mission is to spread dance and theatre to everyone and everywhere in Sweden. Riksteatern organizes, supports and produces performing arts.

The premiere of The Angry Widow was on 10.10.2019, and on 22.11.2019 at 7 p.m. the performance will be broadcast live all over Sweden in cooperation with Riksteatern. Helsinki City Theatre’s main stage (Eläintarhantie 5)
