Review: Kinky Boots

What quality word would best describe the musical Kinky Boots? Fresh? Heartbreaking? Exhilarating? Moving? Fast-paced? Punchy? Arresting? Sparkling? At least these now. Many Finnish musicals make you feel uncomfortable. The singers don’t sing well enough. The performance drags on. The story is silly. Time is getting long. Helsinki City Theatre’s Kinky Boots is from another country. Great music tells a story of difference, prejudice and acceptance. In the midst of all the glitter, fast-paced dance numbers and rhythm, the message of courage and tolerance shines brightest. In Kinky Boots, the stage is taken over by spectacular drag queens. If someone has prejudices at the beginning of the performance, the cordiality and joy of performing will push them aside from the very beginning.
