The play tells the exuberant and fierce story of a young girl who admires parades and uniforms
and grows into an independent woman and writer.
After her father’s death, his friend the Colonel, 28 years her senior, fills the young poet’s thoughts, and she throws herself into his arms with all her senses. The couple go on wilderness expeditions, attend parties held by Rovaniemi’s Nazi elite and Mannerheim’s birthday celebrations, and have sex in the marshes. Their love rivals the Northern Lights in its intensity, but gradually takes on ever more brutal shades.
At the same time, the play offers a precise and incisive analysis of an era. It also traces Finland’s journey from the early years of independence through the wars and into the present day. Caught between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, Finland leans firmly towards the latter—until the alliance collapses.
Told beneath the biting night sky of Lapland, the story spans one woman’s entire life and the growing pains of a nation. The magnificent Heidi Herala brings this powerful and unforgettable story to life.
