Love entices the young Katrina to leave Ostrobothnia for Åland and become a sailor’s wife. Although she is left alone in a humble cottage, time and again she manages to overcome both the hardships she faces and her own limitations. Katrina’s pride and sense of justice pave the way as she challenges society’s norms and ideas of what it means to be a woman.

Katrina is a classic novel that broke new ground when it was published in 1936, catapulting its author Sally Salminen to worldwide fame. The book was translated into more than twenty languages. Kaisa Lundán’s stage adaptation and Aili Järvelä’s newly composed music now breathe new life into Katrina’s moving story.

Actor Emma Klingenberg plays the title role of Katrina, and together with Ulriikka Heikinheimo, Aili Järvelä and Senni Valtonen, she sings Katrina’s heart-wrenching story, whose message remains as relevant as ever.
