The Game Trail is a family tragedy set in an industrial city in the 70s, which touches with its powerful themes.

Erwin and Hilda’s only child, 13-year-old Hanni, is in love. Her boyfriend is 19-year-old Franz. Erwin and Hilda oppose and feel ashamed of the relationship, and don’t know what to do when Hanni refuses to give up her first love. Franz is sentenced to prison for the affair, but after serving the sentence, the relationship continues, and the events accelerate towards tragic conclusions.

What is true love and who has the right to love? The Game Trail is a cruel and everyday story about the end of childhood. It is as much about the parents’ powerlessness with their child who has grown up as strangers as it is about the young people’s compelling desire to take life into their own hands.

Henkilö, jolla on märät hiukset ja siniset silmät, tuijottaa kameraan intensiivisesti. Hänellä on yllään kermanvärinen ja punainen kauluspaita, jossa on vaakasuuntaisia raitoja rinnassa, mustaa taustaa vasten.

Vakavan näköinen nainen istuu pöydän ääressä, kun mustatakkinen mies tarjoaa hänelle pirtelöä, jossa on värikkäät pillit ja sateenvarjo. Heidän takanaan seinällä roikkuu hirviseinä.

Silmälasipäinen, keltaiseen paitaan pukeutunut nainen nojaa puupöydän yli, nojaa päänsä ja toisen kätensä pöydälle ja katsoo suoraan kameraan väsyneenä tai mietteliäänä.

Nainen, jolla on silmälasit ja keltainen toppi, makaa kasvot alaspäin, kädet ojennettuina kuin lentäen, pyöreällä puupöydällä hämärässä huoneessa, jossa on useita tuoleja ja lamppu.

Keltaiseen paitaan pukeutunut nainen istuu ja itkee silmät kiinni, kun taas toinen nainen, jolla on silmälasit ja ruskea liivi, seisoo taustalla huolestuneen näköisenä. Molemmat ovat hämärästi valaistulla näyttämöllä.

Vanhempi silmälasipäinen nainen halaa nuorempaa naista, joka näyttää ahdistuneelta. Vanhemmalla naisella on yllään kukkapaita ja ruskea liivi, kun taas nuoremmalla naisella on silmälasit ja keltainen paita, ja molemmilla on voimakkaat tunteet.

Aurinkolaseihin ja cowboy-hattuun pukeutunut henkilö lukee sarjakuvaa sohvalla, kun toinen keltaisiin pukeutunut henkilö makaa vieressä vihreän peiton alla ja lepuuttaa jalkojaan ensimmäisen henkilön sylissä. Pullot ja pahvit ovat lattialla lähellä.

Mies ja nainen liikkuvat kiireesti pyöreän puisen pöydän ympärillä hämärässä huoneessa, jossa on vihreä kuvioitu matto ja yläpuolella roikkuva valo. Mies vaikuttaa ahdistuneelta, kun taas nainen on osittain kääntynyt poispäin.

Nainen, jolla on kiharat hiuksissaan ja mietteliäs ilme, painaa kätensä poskelleen, kun silmälasipäinen ja valkoiseen aluspaitaan pukeutunut mies nojautuu lähelle hänen takanaan. Kuvassa on lämmin, kellertävä sävy.

Nainen, jolla on toppi ja alusvaatteet, seisoo lavuaarin ja wc:n edessä ja katsoo ylös, kun hän koskettaa leukaansa. Kuvassa on voimakas kelta-oranssi sävy.

Silmälasipäinen henkilö pitelee suurta punaista kuppia, jossa on olki, ja katsoo eteenpäin, kun taas toinen vaaleahiuksinen henkilö on hämärtynyt etualalla.

Kaksi naista istuu sängyllä; toinen makaa pää tyynyllä, kun taas toinen, keltainen toppi yllään, istuu oranssin peiton alla ja katsoo vakavana eteenpäin. Valaistus on dramaattinen ja teatraalinen.

Silmälasipäinen henkilö katsoo sivulle metallisen seinän eteen, ja lasin takaa heijastuu tai näkyy valkoinen takki ja mallinuken haalea, aavemainen kuva.

Cowboy-hattuinen ja aurinkolasipäinen henkilö lukee sisätiloissa istuessaan vanhaa Aku Ankka-sarjakuvaa.

Kolme näyttelijää näyttämöllä dramaattisessa kohtauksessa, seisovat puupöydän ympärillä olutmukien kanssa. Vasemmalla oleva mies vaikuttaa järkyttyneeltä, keskellä oleva nainen näyttää yllättyneeltä ja oikealla oleva mies on vakava. Lavastus on retrotyylinen.

Mies istuu tuolilla hämärässä huoneessa ja katsoo vanhaa televisiota, jossa näkyy hymyilevä pukumies. Lattialla on sinikuvioinen laattakuvio.

13-year-old Hanni and 19-year-old Franz fall in love. The parents do not approve of the relationship and the law forbids it, but the young people do not give up on each other. The Game Trail is based on tragic real events in a small German town in 1967, and the play premiered in 1971. The themes have not gone anywhere in fifty years: teenagers are crazy unconditional in their feelings, parents blind to their child’s best intentions. In the auditorium, one’s own first loves and the parents’ attitude towards them come to mind without searching.

I didn’t know anything about the performance beforehand, and yet it was among my most anticipated, if not the most anticipated, premieres of the autumn. Why? Because the director would be Lauri Maijala and on stage as young lovers Ella Mettänen and Paavo Kinnunen, one of my biggest favorites when it comes to actors. Everything else, including the end result, would be just a bonus. I was already in a receptive state and wanted to be impressed, confused, overwhelmed, serious.

On the small stage of the Helsinki City Theatre, Riistapolku is an excruciatingly powerful, harshly realistic interpretation of a drama classic rarely performed in Finland. The author of the play, German Franz Xaver Kroetz (b. 1946), is known for his strong themes and his plays were particularly popular in Central Europe in the 1970s and 1980s. The play is directed by Lauri Maijala. Riistapolku tells a story based on real-life events and ending in tragedy about unconventional love, unwanted pregnancy and violence.
