Gravity, a dance performance by the Helsinki City Theatre’s dance group Helsinki Dance Company and Kinetic Orchestra , returns to the small stage on 20 September. The choreographer of the audience and critically acclaimed success on the stage of the Helsinki City Theatre for the first time in 2021 has been Jarkko Mandelin.
Gravity continues the continuum of choreographer Jarkko Mandelin’s extremely physical and movement-focused works with eight dancers. The dance performance combines the movement language of modern dance techniques, partner acrobatics and martial arts.
“It feels privileged to be able to return to Gravity again. The previous performance season went well, and the feedback received from the opening of Dance House Helsinki is still warm in my mind. The dancers in the theatre have been doing movement-oriented work for the past few years, and it really shows. It also feels like Gravity’s line-up is very welded together; The trust between the dancers has clearly increased with the performances, and the rehearsals are smooth and natural. I’m also looking forward to seeing and experiencing Gravity again on a small stage!” says choreographer Jarkko Mandelin.
The dancers in the performance are Sanni Giordani, Mia Jaatinen, Jyrki Kasper, Kalle Lähde, Suvi Nieminen, Mikko Paloniemi, Justus Pienmunne and Oskari Turpeinen.
The scenography of the performance was designed by William Iles and the costumes by Elina Kolehmainen. The sound design is by Janne Hast.
Jarkko Mandelin is a contemporary dance choreographer with a degree in classical ballet and an internationally active trainer. In ten years, she has created her own recognizable style and is known especially as a developer of contemporary dance, partner technique and floor technique. Mandelin is the founder and artistic director of the Kinetic Orchestra dance group.
