In September, Gravity, a dance work co-produced by Helsinki Dance Company and Kinetic Orchestra, returns to the Small Stage for its revival premiere. Performed by eight dancers, the production continues choreographer Jarkko Mandelin’s series of intensely physical, movement-driven works.

“Gravity draws inspiration from contemporary dance techniques, partner acrobatics and the functionality of martial arts. The aim is to create an authentic, distinctive, coherent and self-assured dance work. Like the movement, its soundscape, costumes and set evoke associations without placing the work in any specific time or place, thus avoiding unnecessary or empty layers.”

Jarkko Mandelin is a contemporary dance choreographer with a background in classical ballet and an internationally active instructor. Over the past decade, he has developed his own distinctive style and is particularly known for advancing partner work and floorwork techniques in contemporary dance. Mandelin is the founder and artistic director of the dance company Kinetic Orchestra.

Gravity received its world premiere on 11.11.2021 at Helsinki City Theatre’s Small Stage.
