Helsinki City Theatre invites godchildren to learn about the magic and creators of theatre

Värikkääseen raitamekkoon pukeutunut hymyilevä nainen seisoo marmoriportailla nalle ja punainen salkku kädessään. Hänellä on päähine ja kiikarit kaulassaan. Auringonvalo virtaa hänen takanaan olevista suurista ikkunoista.

Helsinki City Theatre invites godchildren born in 2021 to take a peek at what day and night feel and look like in the depths of the theatre. The Toddlers in the Theatre events will be held at the City Theatre on 12 and 13 September as part of the City of Helsinki’s Culture Sponsors project.

In the City Theatre’s bright foyer on the main stage, you can get acquainted with the theatre’s various departments, such as costumes, set design and props, as well as enjoy sunny music sessions. A nocturnal forest is built in the foyer of the small stage, where you can calm down with fairy tales, rhymes and bedtime songs.

“We want to invite our godchildren and their families to experience and sense the magical atmosphere of the theatre and to get to know the people who concretely carry out this magic. Our toddler event showcases everything that happens in our house during the day and even at night. We also hope that families with sponsored children will meet each other at the event,” says Mirja Neuvonen, who is in charge of audience outreach.

Helsinki City Theatre is one of the actors in the Culture Sponsors project and one of the theatre sponsors for children born in Helsinki in 2021. The sponsor theatres offer two events a year in which the sponsored children can participate with their families. The events offered by theatres can be performances or atmospheric and unhurried art sessions for children and their immediate adults. The events are planned with the child’s age in mind and are suitable for all families.

Helsinki City Theatre’s sponsorship activities were launched in the autumn of 2021 with the Nice Journey! and now that children are growing from babies to toddlers, there is another way to explore the world of theatre.

Every child born in Helsinki in 2020 or later will be sponsored by a cultural operator, through whom the child and their family will have a personal contact with art. The activities continue until the child starts school. The culture sponsor is determined by the child’s year of birth. The sponsor theatres for children born in 2021 are the Helsinki City Theatre, the Finnish National Theatre, Svenska Teatern, Teatteri ILMI Ö., Q-teatteri and Puppet Theatre Sampo. Theatre events are free of charge and are organised not only in theatres but also in different parts of Helsinki.

The purpose of the Culture Sponsor Child activities is to increase the well-being and equality of families in Helsinki and to support the child’s growth and development through art and culture. The activities encourage people to see, hear and experience their hometown with a low threshold and to get to know its cultural places.

The Culture Sponsors project is administered by the City of Helsinki’s Culture and Leisure Division. The activities are made possible by a grant from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.

The theatre’s godchildren’s Toddlers in the Theatre events on Monday 12 September at 16–17 and 18–19, Tue 13 September at 10–11 and 12–13 at the Helsinki City Theatre (Eläintarhantie 5).

The children receive an invitation to become a Culture Sponsor Child from the maternity and child health clinic. You can sign up for the activities on the website kummilapset.hel.fi.
