Priscilla, the Queen of the Desert, which has become a phenomenon around the world, will finally be performed in front of Finnish audiences. Known for its music consisting of disco hits and spectacular costumes, the musical tells the story of the incredible bus ride through Australia by two drag queens and one trans woman. The musical, which will premiere on the main stage of the Helsinki City Theatre in August 2022, will be directed by Samuel Harjanne, known from Kinky Boots.
“Now the whole world needs a boost, positive vibes, energy, a feel-good party and faith in a better future. Priscilla offers this with all the legendary and best disco hits and a big orchestra. We will create such a party and an emotional evening around meaningful themes that you won’t forget in an instant,” promises director Samuel Harjanne.
The musical Kinky Boots , directed by Harjanne, became a phenomenon, attracted more than 100,000 spectators at the Helsinki City Theatre in the 2018–2019 season, and has since continued its success at the Tampere Workers’ Theatre since autumn 2020.
Sydney drag queen Tick lures her friends Adam and Bernadette to join her on a performance trip to the Australian outback. Adam is a flamboyant drag queen, Bernadette has already left her successful drag career behind, but agrees to join in to survive the death of her boyfriend. An unforgettable journey across Australia begins on an epic party bus, glitter-filled and to the beat of disco hits such as It’s Raining Men, Go West, I Love the Nightlife, True Colors, I Will Survive, Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Hot Stuff.
“The musical Priscilla brings an unexpected equation to the stage, drag queens and the desert. And the Australian nature, which has not often been seen on Finnish stages. Priscilla is a very important work for Australians, almost a national epic that strongly celebrates their country and nature,” says director Samuel Harjanne.
