Kari Hotakainen’s beloved The Trench Road as a clown version at the Helsinki City Theatre

The super-popular Trench Road by Red Nose Company, which specialises in theatre clowning, will have its re-premiere on the Arena stage of the Helsinki City Theatre on 1 November. The performance will be seen at the Arena on five nights in November.

Red Nose Company’s The Trench Road is a hilarious comedy in which the talented Timo Ruuskanen and Tuukka Vasama jump from one role to another and go through Kari Hotakainen’s Finlandia Prize-winning novel in two hours. Directed by Otso Kautto , the hugely popular performance is crowned by live music performed by the clown duo, from Neil Young to U2 and Johnny Cash. The costumes for the performance are designed by Tuomas Lampinen and the lighting design is by Jere Kolehmainen. The performance is a co-production with Teatteri Quo Vadis.

The story begins when Matti Virtanen has lost his family. A man who has excelled on the home front – in cooking and childcare – falls into nothing. Matti realizes that by buying a house, he could
to get his wife to reverse the decision to divorce. The jogging trails in the suburbs lead him into the middle of the idyll of front-line soldiers’ houses.

The premiere of Trench Road, which is suitable for over 14-year-olds, was at the Open Doors Theatre in 2014. The performance has been seen 74 times on tour, from Helsinki to Kajaani and from Lappeenranta to Pori.

Red Nose Company is a Helsinki-based professional theatre group that has quickly become one of the most sought-after touring theatres in Finland. At the moment, the repertoire includes the performances Trench Road, Red Line and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Over the past three years, the group has already had more than 15,000 viewers around the country. Red Nose Company performs for all ages, and tours on the most significant stages in Finland. In 2017, the group was selected to participate in the Cultural Foundations’ Art Testers project, which offers culture to eighth-graders. Red Nose Company is the first group in Finland specializing in theatre clowning. It was founded in 2005 by a group of young professional actors.
