Helsinki City Theatre and Q-teatteri’s first collaborative performance, M – Notes on the Case of a Man from Malmi, will premiere at Malmi on 30 August. The performance is part of the regional Malmi in the Main Role art project. The performance, which takes place in different parts of Malmi, asks who has the power to decide what each person should spend their lives on and who decides how to be here?
On a late summer day, a group of worried Malmi residents gather in the garden of the Malmberg family. The family’s 17-year-old child, Miska Malmberg, has disappeared. The mother wants to act, the grandmother is pampering, and the school welfare officer is strangely silent. The parties are united by a desire to understand what has actually happened – and above all, who is to blame? M – Entries from the case of one of Malmi’s residents delves into the themes of intergenerational incomprehension, the use of power and social confrontation through the case of a disappearance that has befallen a neighbourhood community.
The performance is based on the community theatre activities carried out by the Helsinki City Theatre and Q Theatre in 2022–2024 in Malmi, which involve residents. The script includes material from various theatre workshops and other art activities, among other things. The work features eight actors from the Q-teatteri community theatre and a large group of 13–65-year-old residents of Malmi and the surrounding area. The performance will take place in different parts of Malmi and the audience will tour with the performers at different meeting points.
“The work is tied to the venue of performance, i.e. Malmi, in a very special way. It is rare to be able to implement site-specific theatre with such a volume, and a large working group consisting of creators of different ages and backgrounds is a great resource! Personally, I’m really excited about the whole,” says Janne Puustinen, the writer and director of the work.
“It has been fascinating to bring the multifaceted world of the performance to different stages, and I believe that the humorous interpretation offers something to chew on in a good way for different generations,” continues the work’s co-writer-director Tuomo Rämö.
