Molli’s Evening Fun is a fun and participatory performance about a topic that is very familiar to families with children – sleeping. The performance will be completed as part of the Culture Godchildren project offered to children born in Helsinki in 2021 and their immediate adults, and it will premiere on 6 March in the foyer of a small stage. From the beginning of April, all other children over the age of 2 and their adults will also be able to enjoy the performance.
Based on Katri Kirkkopelto’s popular children’s book of the same name, Molli’s Evening Hepuli is a fun and participatory performance about a topic that is very familiar to families with children – sleeping. What happens when Moll and her best friend Sisu get night sickness instead of evening fatigue? The performance needs the help of the audience to get the main characters Molli and Sisu to sleep.
“Molli’s evening party is already the fourth event that we are preparing as part of the Culture Godchildren project. It is great that HKT also produces performances for the smallest viewers, and our working group has great enthusiasm and expectation for the target group. The original book by Katri Kirkkopelto really invites you to get on the stage of the theatre and the work contains elements that can be quite recognizable for families with small children. On stage, we will see all the different phases of the evening frolic, from tickling to pillow fights and from unrestrained swishing to the last moment of dancing,” says director Jenny Jumppanen.
The cast includes Kaisa Torkkel, Akseli Ferrand and Leena Rapola. The dramatization and direction of the performance is Jenny Jumppanen. Lighting design is by Milla Veirto, costumes and set design by Aija Nurminen and camouflage by Tuula Kuittinen. The sound design and compositions are by Eero Niemi.
The recommended age for the performance is from 2 years of age and its duration is about 30 minutes.
Culture’s godchildren
Helsinki City Theatre is one of the actors in the Culture Godchildren project and one of the theatre sponsors of children born in Helsinki in 2021. The sponsor theatres offer two events a year in which the sponsored children can participate with their families. The events are planned with the child’s age in mind and are suitable for all families.
Every child born in Helsinki in 2020 or later will be sponsored by a cultural operator, through whom the child and their family will have a personal contact with art. The activities continue until the child starts school. The culture sponsor is determined by the child’s year of birth. The purpose of the activities is to increase the well-being and equality of families in Helsinki and to support the growth and development of children through art and culture. The activities encourage people to see, hear and experience their hometown with a low threshold and to get to know its cultural places.
The Culture Sponsors project is administered by the City of Helsinki’s Culture and Leisure Division. The activities are made possible by a grant from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.
The premiere of Molli’s Evening Hepuli for Culture’s godchildren on 6 March 2024 and performances for others from 3 April onwards in the foyer of the Helsinki City Theatre’s small stage (Eläintarhantie 5).
