The City Theatre’s cooperation with the Theatre Theatre continues under the direction of Leea Klemola

Joukko rennosti pukeutuneita ihmisiä poseeraa leikkisästi jumppamattojen päällä tilavassa, auringon valaisemassa huoneessa, jossa on puulattiat ja suuret ikkunat. Osa istuu, osa makaa tai venyttelee. Tunnelma vaikuttaa rennolta ja hauskalta.

The collaboration between the Helsinki City Theatre and the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki, which began in spring 2021, continues, and an entire class of new actors and future theatre artists will be presented at Studio Pasila from 23 April onwards in the play Viggo Mortensen’s Horses, directed by Leea Klemola.

The starting point of the play and the venue of the performance is the course centre in Nurmijärvi, where people, horses and actor Viggo Mortensen all participate in the stunt actors’ course.

The script framework prepared by Leea Klemola and Rosa-Maria Perä is completed into a finished script and a theatre performance directed by Klemola through the stage process. Cooperation between the director, scriptwriters, acting students and the rest of the artistic team is essential.

The performance is a continuation of the three-year collaboration between the Theatre Academy’s Degree Programme in Acting and the Helsinki City Theatre, which began in the spring of 2021, in which third-year students of acting come to Studio Pasila for the spring and prepare a performance as their bachelor’s project together with professionals from outside the school.

Through the cooperation, acting students will get to know professionals in their own field and their working methods and practices in Finland’s largest theatre. At the same time, the theatre and the audience will have the opportunity to get to know the students in the field and the promises of the future. In the spring of 2021, the collaboration resulted in the completion of Decamerone, directed by Akse Pettersson.

Viggo Mortensen’s Horses, which premieres at Studio Pasila on 23 April, stars Kate Lusenberg, Julius Susimäki, Mauno Terävä, Akseli Lehtinen, Milla Kaitalahti, Veera Anttila, Heikki Nousiainen, Ville Hilska, Juhana Hurme, Alexandra Oupornikova, Juuso Timonen and Nana Saijets.

The set design is by Katariina Kirjavainen and the costumes are designed by Vilma Mattila. The lighting designer is Jaakko Sirainen (Theatre Academy) and the sound designer is Ville Aalto. Henri Karjalainen is responsible for the design of the camouflage. The director’s assistant is Jussi Lankoski.

Actor, director and playwright Leea Klemola started her work as a theatre actress, but she is also remembered for many Finnish films such as The Geography of Fear, The Maiden Butterfly and I Tell You Everything. Klemola has directed plays for e.g. Kuopio City Theatre, Tampere Theatre and most recently Q-Teatteri with the play Inä, Askartelija (2021), which he also wrote together with Rosa-Maria Perä. Klemola has been awarded several Finnish theatre and film industry awards as well as the Pro Finlandia medal. This is the first time Klemola has visited the Helsinki City Theatre.
