The dance piece Two-Colour Fugue, which was cancelled in the spring due to the coronavirus, will have its long-awaited premiere

Kolme rennosti pukeutunutta ihmistä hyppii ilmassa valkoista taustaa vasten, kädet kohotettuna ja jalat koukistettuina, mikä välittää energian ja liikkeen tunnetta.

Helsinki Dance Company and Carl Knif Company’s joint dance performance Two-Colour Fugue, which was cancelled in March due to the coronavirus epidemic , will premiere on 12 October, and the work will have a total of four performances in October-November 2020 at Studio Pasila.

I’m looking forward to next week when the rehearsals continue and we can return to the performance with the dancers. Everything was almost ready when the premiere in March was cancelled. The work has been brewing in our minds and bodies, and I am sure that we will now find new dimensions and levels in it. It’s great to be able to enjoy live performances and meet the audience after the exceptional times. I really hope that during the autumn we could return to normal, there would be performances and the audience would dare to come and see them,” says choreographer Carl Knif.

The title of the dance piece Two-Colour Fugue , a joint effort by the Helsinki City Theatre’s dance group Helsinki Dance Company and Carl Knif Company, refers to the preludes and fugues composed for piano by Dmitri Shostakovich, which choreographer Carl Knif was fascinated by on his first listening 10 years ago. In his new choreography, Knif finally gets to combine the timeless beauty, austerity and precise formal language of Shostakovich’s music, which he admires, with the rich expression of the dancers.

“In Two-Colour Fugue , I have found a new and fresh perspective on movement and choreography. The goal has been to find a fresh way of approaching music, as well as a more playful approach and a more sprawling language to the choreography. That it doesn’t have to be so tied to form or a certain aesthetic. Magnificent dancers and Shostakovich’s powerful music transport the work between wild and hilarious and precise and deliberate expression. The sprawling nature of the music and the diverse themes have inspired me to play with the theatre space and the objects associated with it,” Knif describes her work.

The seven-member performers of the two-colour fugue consist of virtuoso dancers from Helsinki Dance Company and Carl Knif Company. The dancers in the work are Jonna Aaltonen, Jyrki Kasper, Pekka Louhio, Heidi Naakka, Mikko Paloniemi, Anna Stenberg and Eero Vesterinen.

William Iles is responsible for the lighting design and scenography. The costume designer is Karoliina Koiso-Kanttila, and the sound designer is Janne Hast. The camouflage was designed by Milja Mensonen.
