Within the framework of the Stage for Contemporary Performance, two productions are staged annually at HKT’s Studio Pasila. We create works for the larger stage with a 328-seat auditorium, and each production has at least 10 performances. We do not programme guest performances.
- In the spring season, HKT produces a premiere as an in-house production, which is programmed through an invitation process.
- For the summer residency, the artists are selected through an open call. The selected working group will have access to studio Pasila’s facilities during June and July, with performances scheduled for August. The production is the responsibility of the working group itself. The purpose of the summer residency is to offer artists from the independent scene space and time for artistic development by utilizing the existing spatial resources of the Helsinki City Theatre.
We select artists or working groups for both programming slots whose goal is to create ambitious and forward-looking works for larger stages and audiences. The summer residency serves as an opportunity for new creators or more experienced artists who have previously worked on smaller stages to broaden their skills. For the spring season’s in-house production, we expect applicants to have prior experience working on larger stages and professional theatre environments.
Open call for the Summer Residency
An open call for the summer residency is held annually, organized through individual online meetings. Participating artists or artist groups will meet the curator and present their performance idea in a format of their choosing.
The open call for the 2027 summer residency has ended on September 28, 2025. The open call for 2028 will open in autumn 2026.
Frequently asked questions about the summer residency and the open call can be found here.
Spring Season Premiere
Stage for Contemporary Performance’s spring season premiere is produced in-house by the Helsinki City Theatre. The premiere is commissioned through an invitation process. We are currently planning the program two to three years ahead.
In 2025, Helsinki City Theatre will organize monthly curator meetings for artists from the contemporary dance and contemporary performance fields. Artists will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with either Valtteri Raekallio, Artistic Director of Helsinki Dance Company, or Riikka Thitz, Curator of the Stage for Contemporary Performance. More information on curator meetings available here.
