Selma is almost blind and works in a factory to support herself and her beloved son, Gene. She is saving for an operation for her son, who has the same serious eye disease as she does and is gradually losing his sight. To escape reality and cope with everyday life, Selma retreats into a fantasy world filled with hopeful musical numbers.
The musical version of Dancer in the Dark features entirely new music composed by Marie Højlund. The music springs from the sounds Selma hears in her daily life: as her sight deteriorates, she experiences the world through her sense of hearing.
With Dancer in the Dark, director Jakob Höglund continues to bring new musicals to the stage of Lilla Teatern. This time, the ensemble is larger than ever, and for the first time, dancers from Helsinki Dance Company are also taking part. Lumi Aunio stars as Selma.
The production is a hopeful tragedy, a portrait of a heartbreaking relationship between mother and son, and above all, a fast-paced musical whose rhythm never lets up. On the factory floor, amid the dust and noise, dreams come to life.
