Ei kertotti regretta is a Finnish novel based on Tommi Kinnunen’s beloved novel, which was nominated for the Finlandia Prize. It tells the story of Finnish women who worked for the German army during the Continuation War.

When German troops withdraw from northern Norway and return to their homeland, the services of Finnish women are no longer needed. Only some pregnant women are taken along, others are allowed to return home, accompanied by shame. Working for a respected comrade-in-arms nation has turned into treason. To avoid a prison camp

Kolme istuvaa, aikakauden vaatteisiin pukeutunutta naista näyttää synkältä, dramaattisesti valaistulta näyttämöllä. Heidän takanaan seisoo kolme lippalakkipäistä ja villapaitaista miestä, joista yksi soittaa säkkipilliä ja kaksi säätää naisten hiuksia, mikä luo jännittyneen teatterikohtauksen.

Viisi vintage-tyylisiin takkeihin, mekkoihin, saappaisiin ja aurinkolaseihin pukeutunutta naista seisoo rivissä lavalla. Yksi nainen edessä nostaa dramaattisesti kättään, kun muut katselevat. Kohtaus on kirkkaasti valaistu ja sen tausta on minimalistinen.

Etualalla seisoo ruskeaan mekkoon ja oranssiin neuletakkiin pukeutunut nainen, joka näyttää ahdistuneelta, ja hänen takanaan seisoo kolme univormupukuista miestä varuillaan punaisella taustalla.

Kaksi naista seisoo pimeällä näyttämöllä, jonka taustalla on suuri, valaistu täysikuu. Edessä olevalla naisella on pitkä mekko ja huivi, kauempana takana olevalla naisella kevyt takki ja housut.

Viisi huiviin pukeutunutta naista seisoo lähekkäin ja lämmittää käsiään pienen nuotion äärellä näyttämöllä, ja taustalla on suuri hehkuva kuu ja dramaattinen oranssinpunainen valaistus, joka luo jännittyneen ja tunteikkaan ilmapiirin.

Neljä vintage-vaatteisiin ja huiviin pukeutunutta naista seisoo lavalla matkalaukkujen kanssa nauraen ja vuorovaikutuksessa. Suuri kuu ja oranssinpunainen tausta luovat dramaattisen tunnelman heidän takanaan.

Neljä vintage-vaatteisiin ja huiviin pukeutunutta naista seisoo lavalla matkalaukut kädessään, ja taustalla on suuri täysikuu ja oranssinpunainen taivas, joka tuo mieleen dramaattisen tai teatterikohtauksen.

Viisi aikakauden pukuihin pukeutunutta naista, joista joillakin on päähuivi, kokoontuu lavalle matkalaukkujen ja säilykkeiden kanssa. Neljä kyykistyy tai polvistuu tutkimaan tavaroita, kun taas yksi seisoo hymyillen taustalla. Asetelma viittaa dramaattiseen esitykseen.

Etualalla seisoo vanhanaikaisiin vaatteisiin ja huiviin pukeutunut henkilö, joka näyttää huolestuneelta, kun taas taustalla hämärästi valaistulla näyttämöllä on joukko samanlaisiin vaatteisiin pukeutuneita ihmisiä.

Kuusi näyttelijää seisoo karulla, abstraktilla näyttämöllä, jossa on kiviportaat ja karu puu. Viidellä on tylsät vaatteet ja matkalaukut, ja yksi näyttelijä, jolla on harmaa univormu ja korkea hattu, elehtii ojennetuin käsin. Taustalla on lämmin värisävy.

Lavalla seisovat mies ja nainen, jotka molemmat näyttävät yllättyneiltä tai ahdistuneilta. Mies pitelee puista ovea, kun taas ruudulliseen mekkoon pukeutunut nainen puristaa tummaa takkia. Kohtaus on hämärästi valaistu, mikä tuo mieleen dramaattisen teatteriesityksen.

Kaksi näyttelijää lavalla puvuissa; toinen polvistuu ja viittoo kädellään suuta, hänellä on punainen hattu ja ruudullinen mekko, kun taas toinen seisoo pitkä ruskea takki ja sininen huivi päässään. Taustalla on oranssia ja hajallaan rekvisiittaa.

Neljä aikakauden pukuihin pukeutunutta näyttelijää seisoo näyttämön edessä, ja heidän takanaan on dramaattinen oranssi valaistus ja siluettina näkyvät rauniot. Taustalla näkyy muusikoita ja muita hahmoja. Lavan lattialla on valkoisia viivakuvioita.

Dramaattinen näyttämökohtaus, jossa neljä naista vintage-vaatteissa ja huivissa kantaa matkatavaroita, vastapäätä korkeita raunioita ja karua puuta. Siluettihahmot ja muusikot seisovat voimakkaan oranssia taustaa vasten.

Neljä vintage-vaatteisiin ja huiviin pukeutunutta naista seisoo dramaattisessa lavastuksessa, jonka taustalla on raunioita ja muusikoita ja jota valaisee oranssinpunainen tausta, joka viittaa auringonlaskuun tai tulipaloon.

Aikakauden asuun pukeutunut nainen vaivaa taikinaa puupöydällä keskellä näyttämöä, ja taustalla on maalaismaista rekvisiittaa ja kolme istuvaa naista. Näyttämöllä on oranssi tausta ja dramaattinen valaistus, jotka luovat teatteritunnelman.

Kolme huiviin ja kuviomekkoihin pukeutunutta naista kantaa matkalaukkuja hämärästi valaistulla näyttämöllä; taustalla kaksi naista istuu sängyllä roikkuvan valon alla, ja toinen lohduttaa toista, joka vaikuttaa ahdistuneelta.

Kaksi näyttelijää istuu paljain jaloin erillisillä sängyillä roikkuvan valon alla hymyillen ja ylöspäin katsoen. Toisella on punainen hattu ja ruudullinen mekko, toisella harmaa takki ja housut. Taustalla on pimeää ja paljaita, lehdettömiä puita.

Lavalla esiintyy kolme näyttelijää; yksi nainen seisoo, yksi istuu pitelemässä sanomalehteä lampun vieressä, ja toinen soittaa pianoa. Taustalla on punainen suuri täysikuu, ja hahmojen alla on kuviollinen matto.

Teatterikohtauksessa näkyy ahdistunut nainen, joka pitelee edessään nippua, ja hänen takanaan seisoo tummiin vaatteisiin pukeutunut ryhmä. Oikealla puolella seisoo toinen takkiin ja punaiseen hattuun pukeutunut nainen, jolla on matkalaukku kädessään. Tausta on karu ja dramaattinen.

Kolme naista, joilla on päähuivi ja vintage-vaatteet, syleilevät tiukasti hämärästi valaistulla näyttämöllä, kaksi matkalaukkua on maassa heidän vieressään ja taustalla on lehdetön puu, joka herättää synkän, dramaattisen kohtauksen.

Ruudulliseen mekkoon pukeutunut nainen istuu maassa pimeällä näyttämöllä puuta vasten nojaten. Taustalla kuusi ihmistä seisoo rivissä soihtuja kädessään, ja taustalla on tulinen oranssi tausta ja karujen puiden siluetteja.

Lavalla esiintyy kolme mustiin pukeutunutta muusikkoa, joilla on kitarat, rummut ja koskettimet. Taustalla on lämmin oranssinkeltainen sävy, ja lavan ympärillä on vintage-lyhtyjä, jotka luovat viihtyisän ja intiimin tunnelman.

Towards the light of summer

It is the spring of 1945. World War II is coming to an end, and German soldiers are boarding evacuation ships in northern Norway. Women who worked for the German army are left on the beach and taken to Norwegian prison camps. When a guard releases a small load of prisoners, five women from northern Finland decide to walk home through burnt and mined Lapland.

About the set design of the play

Didn't Say Regrets The set design started from the idea of creating as spacious, empty a space as possible on the big stage, which captures the feeling of the place where the work takes place, the wilderness. As a set designer, I was fascinated by the idea of the nature of the wilderness, which is merciless and raw to the traveller in its nakedness.

About the sound design and music of the performance

I started designing the soundscape of No Regrets by asking myself what the compositions and sound could give to this particular work. This story contains dark themes and events, so I wanted to try to make sure that when dealing with them, the sound side would bring oxygen, lightness, beauty to the work and give the women the power to move forward.

Director’s word: Those silenced by shame get a voice

I started preparing this stage work more than two years ago. The world was shaken by the pandemic crisis, but war still seemed far away. I thought that we are already a long way away from our own wars and we can safely look at the more silent and painful aspects of our history. Perhaps the most meaningful aspect of the work would be to highlight the personal passage through the crisis as a point of view. But then everything changed and our collective wounds became visible in an instant. It turned out that there is only a thin translucent scar tissue on top of them. Dealing with our past is only just beginning.

The Helsinki City Theatre’s large stage has been seen many times, but rarely has its depth and space been used as impressively as in the play No Regrets . The stage opens up to the clear of the north, a sparkling, steaming river, a landscape of a full moon and sometimes so deeply blood-red from war that the pain of the wounded soldiers can be felt all the way to the stands. At the end, the landscape is burnt Rovaniemi, where only chimneys and burnt black tree trunks remain.
