It’s Figaro and Susanna’s wedding day, but it’s not just the wedding couple who are in love. Their employer, Count Almaviva, is as interested in Susanna as he is uninterested in his countess, while the young man Cherubino wants to sleep with everything that moves.
The Marriage of Figaro is a relationship drama with elements of both bedchamber farce and tragedy. We follow three couples in different dependencies to each other. It’s about power, about gender, about age, about and above all about love.
Chaos ensues and the count’s nocturnal castle garden becomes the scene of unexpected events. Desire lurks behind every door and under strange confusions, things are brought to a head. Who gets who when the day is over? What love is sincere and true?
The Marriage of Figaro was a great success when it was first premiered in 1784. Shortly thereafter, the play was set to music by Mozart, which perhaps became his most beloved opera. Jakob Höglund’s playful farce takes you to the wedding where everything goes right to hell and then just right.
