The New Eden is a carnivalesque musical comedy about Pasila after the end of the world. In this uncontrollably funny show, Juho Mantere’s grotesque touch meets the spirit of a Disney musical.
A global nuclear war has swept across the planet, but by a whim of chance, a theatre in Pasila and its staff have been spared destruction. When the old professions of the theatre people prove useless in the post-apocalyptic reality, they embark on a project to build a new life under the leadership of their resourceful caretaker.
On the ruins of the old theatre, a community is born, which they call the New Eden. Together they swear never to repeat the mistakes of the past —but it soon becomes clear that not everything is perfect even in paradise.
Sonja, a former acting student, still dreams of a role she never landed, and ex-pizza delivery man Petteri dreams of unattainable love. Meanwhile, the caretaker who has become the leader of Eden has a secret that threatens to crumble the entire community.
In theatre and love, all means are allowed, but where is the line when it comes to one’s own survival and belief in a better future?
The new Eden combines black humour, topical themes and poignant music in a way you’ve never experienced before. It’s a breathtakingly funny and heartbreakingly beautiful story about hope and love — and how far we’re willing to go in the fight for a better world.
The musical is written and directed by Juho Mantere, whose previous work “Uusi nousuun – Laman lasten elämä ja teot” became a theatre event at the Q Theatre. The music was composed by Henri Lyysaari, one of the most promising composers of the younger generation.
The New Eden is a co-production of the Helsinki City Theatre and the Q Theatre.
The musical is a trial production of the Theatre’s Green Book .
