Kari Heiskanen’s new direction brings Lillian Hellman’s (1905-1984) The Little Foxes (1939) a classic of American family dramas close to today’s people. The thriller of great emotions about greed will premiere on 3 April on the small stage of the Helsinki City Theatre.
The Little Foxes is also known as the film starring Bette Davis (1941). At the Helsinki City Theatre, the iconic role of Regina Giddens will be played by the magnificent Sari Siikander. Other roles are played by Rauno Ahonen, Seppo Halttunen, Risto Kaskilahti, Pertti Koivula, Elviira Kujala, Paavo Kääriäinen, Ursula Salo and Linda Zilliacus.
Brothers Ben (Seppo Halttunen) and Oscar (Rauno Ahonen) have a business idea that would bring in millions, but they also need the support of their sister Regina (Sari Siikander) to make it happen. Regina must convince her husband Horace (Risto Kaskilahti) to invest money in the brothers’ idea. But to the disappointment of her siblings, she has no intention of getting involved in the business. Ben and Oscar decide to resort to illegal means to get Horace’s money. In order to secure the property, there is also a plan for the young cousins, Leo (Paavo Kääriäinen) and Alexandra (Elviira Kujala). In this family, you don’t win with love, but with greed – who is willing to go the farthest.
“Who among us wouldn’t want to get rich, seize the opportunity to get a huge amount of money, if such a thing were available. It is a question of how far each person is willing to deviate from their morality. It separates the worthless from the valuable,” says director Kari Heiskanen.
“Theatre is at its best when it comes to depicting the forces that move people. The little foxes skillfully combine the dimensions of good and evil, beautiful and ugly, as well as desolation and hope. And it does so by revolving everything around one strong element – money,” Heiskanen continues.
The play has been retranslated into Finnish by Lauri Sipari, and the set and costumes have been designed by Elina Kolehmainen. The lighting design is by Kari Leppälä and the sound design by Eero Niemi. The camouflage was designed by Aino Hyttinen.
