The Helsinki City Theatre and the North Helsinki Band School will carry out a touring performance in the outdoor spaces of northeast Helsinki, Village in the Northeast — a tour from yards to paths. The performance is part of the Spotlight Northeast art project, and it will premiere on 12 September.
As the name suggests, the performance explores what it’s like to throw yourself into the reality of northeast Helsinki for a moment, to get lost on a tour through local yards and paths. The performance, which focuses on the theme of the home region, includes several homes and yards in the north-eastern area, and is therefore a continuation of the Art for Homes performances carried out last year.
“In the autumn of 2019, the Art for Homes performances received a delightfully enthusiastic reception, and it is great that many people have been willing to open their backyards to the public also in connection with this performance project,” says Laura Ikonen , the developer of the concept, from the audience work of the Helsinki City Theatre.
The performance starts from Palokoukunkuja in Tapulikaupunki, and during it, a distance of about two kilometres will be travelled through Puustellinmetsä to the Suutarila district. During the journey, in the northeastern landscape, you will meet a group of surprising passers-by, each of whom has their own personal relationship with the area. In addition, there is a sense of celebration in the air, and the audience can also participate in local yard parties during the performance.
The performance features a 16-member cast of local residents. Based on the material produced by the group, the performance has been scripted and directed by the artists of the Valokeilassa Koillinen regional project Janne Puustinen, Laura Ikonen and Martta Pesonen from the Helsinki City Theatre. In addition, musicians Aleksi Kinnunen and Erik Fräki from the North Helsinki Band School and dancer Angela Aldebs will participate.“The group has been bold and productive, and it will be a multi-generational and multisensory journey to the heart of Northeast Helsinki,” the regional artists promise.
The performance lasts about an hour and a half, and the journey takes place in varied terrain. There will be a total of eight screenings during September, the last two of which will be part of the Local Landscapes Festival, which is being held in Northeast Helsinki for the second time.
In the Spotlight is a three-year joint project of the Helsinki City Theatre, Zodiak Centre for New Dance, North Helsinki Band School and Teatteri Tuike, which aims to increase the range of arts and culture in the districts of Tapulikaupunki, Suutarila, Siltamäki, Puistola and Tapanila in 2019–2021.
