Nykyesityksen näyttämön vuoden 2023 ohjelmisto alkaa toukokuussa vierailuesityksillä.

TIIKERI – Se some@bility näyttämöteos eli consertti ja bienanaali on Milla Jarkon studio Pasilan näyttämölle, someen ja muihin tiloihin tursuileva sirkuksellinen esitys. Ami Karvosen, Kid Kokon ja Anna Mustosen yhteisesitys Liike ja tyhjyys tarkastelee tyhjyyden tuntua.

Toukokuussa koetaan myös vuoden ensimmäinen kantaesitys, Fjolla Hoxhan osallistava kuunteluesitys What is seen and what’s (left) behind the scene?, joka tuo esiin teatterissa tehtävää näkymätöntä työtä.

Elokuussa kantaesitykset jatkuvat. Trial & Theatre -ryhmän sanaton nukketeatteriesitys Nano Steps tuo näyttämölle nuketettavat mikropartikkelit ja kertoo kummallisesta kahdenvälisestä suhteesta mittakaavojen ja aistirajojen yli. Kauden päättää Masi Tiitan ohjaama Dilemma, joka näyttämöllistää kahden henkilön välisen hienovireisen, paikallaan junnaavan ja vaille ratkaisuja jäävän keskustelun.

Esitysten lisäksi järjestämme osana toukokuun ohjelmistoa esittävän taiteen ammattilaisille suunnatun Riittävän laitostunut -seminaarin, jossa keskustellaan laitosteatterin ja vapaan kentän suhteista Nykyesityksen näyttämön tarjoaman esimerkin valossa.

Nykyesityksen näyttämö on Helsingin kaupunginteatterin studio Pasilassa vuosina 2022–23 toimiva pilottihanke, joka tuo uusia esittävän taiteen muotoja osaksi teatterin ohjelmistoa. Vuodesta 2024 alkaen Nykyesityksen näyttämö toimii osana teatterin vakinaista ohjelmistoa. 

Nykyesitykset ovat ajankohtaisia esittävän taiteen muotoja, joissa eri taiteenlajit tyypillisesti kietoutuvat toisiinsa tai muihin aloihin kuten tieteeseen. Nykyesitykset voivat olla herkkiä tai provokatiivisia avauksia taiteen paikasta maailmassa. Ne voivat levittää esittävän taiteen näyttämöä takahuoneisiin, digitaaliseen mediaan tai ihmisen kokoisen mittakaavan tuolle puolen. Nykyesitykset vaikuttuvat usein yhteiskunnallisista keskusteluista ja maailmanlaajuisista kehityskuluista. Siksi nykyesitysten tekijät tarkastelevat myös teatteria, esiintyjyyttä ja yleisösuhdetta omalaatuisista näkökulmista.

Nykyesityksen näyttämön suunnittelusta ja ohjelmistovalinnoista vastaa kolmihenkinen kuraattoriryhmä, jonka muodostavat esitystaiteilija, tanssija Suvi Tuominen, ohjaaja, väitöstutkija Tuomas Laitinen sekä kuraattori Riikka Thitz.

Vuosien 2022 ja 2023 aikana Nykyesityksen näyttämön toiminta jakautuu vierailunäyttämöön sekä kantaesityksiin ja niiden valmistamiseen suunnattuihin näyttämöresidensseihin. Vierailunäyttämö ajoittuu toukokuuhun, residenssityöskentely kesä-heinäkuuhun ja residenssissä valmistettujen teosten kantaesitykset elokuuhun.

Esitystoimintaa täydentää eri verkkoalustoilla julkaistava nykyesitystä käsittelevä sarja, joka koostuu kirjoituksista, haastatteluista, videoista ja keskusteluista. Linkit sarjan eri osiin päivittyvät tälle sivulle.

Nykyesityksen näyttämö on syntynyt esittävän taiteen vapaalla kentällä toimivien taiteilijoiden aloitteesta. Lauri Antti Mattilan kokoama työryhmä toimitti keväällä 2019 Helsingin Kaupunginteatterin johtoryhmälle ehdotuksen, jonka oli allekirjoittanut 885 esittävän taiteen ammattilaista. Ehdotuksessa pyydettiin teatteria vastaamaan ajankohtaisiin muutoksiin yhteiskunnassa ja esittävän taiteen työkentällä.

The 2023 programme of Stage for Contemporary Performance kicks off in May with guest performances.

Milla Jarko’s circusy performance TIIKERI – The (some@bility) performance piece i.e. a concerto and a biennianal spreads all over studio Pasila, social media, and other places, while Ami Karvonen, Kid Kokko and Anna Mustonen explore the feel of emptiness with their co-performance Liike ja tyhjyys (Movement and emptiness).

The first premiere of the year will also take place in May. Fjolla Hoxha’s What is seen and what’s (left) behind the scene? is a participatory sound performance that brings the invisible labour of the theatre to the fore.

The premieres will continue in August with Nano Steps by the puppet theatre group Trial & Theatre, bringing manipulation of microparticles on stage, while in Masi Tiitta’s Dilemma two actors engage in a subtle, repetitive and indecisive conversation.

In addition to performances, the May program includes Institutionalized Enough -seminar, directed to professionals working in the field of performing arts. The seminar invites its participants into a conversation about the relations of institutional theatre and the freelance field, using the Stage for Contemporary Performance as an example.

The Stage for Contemporary Performance is a pilot project implemented in studio Pasila during 2022 and 2023. The objective of the project is to include different forms of contemporary performance in Helsinki City Theatre’s programme. From 2024 on the stage will continue as a part of the theatre’s seasonal programme.

Contemporary performances are topical forms of performing arts where different artforms or other fields such as science intertwine. Contemporary performances can be sensitive or provocative openings on the place of the art in the world. They might expand the stage to the back rooms, digital media or beyond human scales. Contemporary performances are often affected by societal discussions and global developments. Therefore the makers of contemporary performance view the theatre, performance and spectatorship from unique perspectives.

The planning of the programme and selections are made by a curatorial team composed of dancer, performance artist Suvi Tuominen; director, doctoral candidate Tuomas Laitinen, and curator Riikka Thitz.

During 2022 and 2023 the activities of the Stage for Contemporary Performance are divided into two parts: a programme of visiting performances in May and premieres in August, created during residency periods taking place in June and July.
The performance programme is complemented by a series of texts, interviews, videos and discussions that are published on different online platforms. The links to the series will be updated on this page.

Stage for Contemporary Performance was initiated by freelance artists. A working group led by Lauri Antti Mattila approached the executive team of the Helsinki City Theatre with a proposal signed by 885 performing arts professionals. The proposal asked the theatre to respond to topical challenges in the society and field of performing arts.

In 2022–2023, the Stage for Contemporary Performance is supported by the Kone Foundation.
