Studio Pasilassa toimiva Nykyesityksen näyttämö tuo uusia esittävän taiteen muotoja osaksi Helsingin Kaupunginteatterin ohjelmistoa. Näyttämön toiminta alkoi Koneen Säätiön tukemana pilottihankkeena vuosina 2021–2023. Vuodesta 2024 alkaen näyttämö toimii osana teatterin vakinaista ohjelmistoa.
Nykyesityksen näyttämö ei edusta vain yhtä esittävän taiteen perinnettä, vaan kannustaa monimuotoisuuteen ja taiteiden väliseen vuoropuheluun. Nykyesityksen näyttämöllä esitetään taidetta, joka reagoi muuttuvaan maailmaan sekä sisältönsä että muotonsa kautta. Vapaan kentän taiteilijoille näyttämö avaa suuremman esitystilan ja laajemmat resurssit teostensa toteuttamiseen. Paikallisessa taiteen ekosysteemissä näyttämö on ainutlaatuinen tila tulevaisuuden taiteelle. Kesäresidenssin tarkoituksena on tarjota vapaan kentän taiteilijoille tilaa ja aikaa taiteelliselle ajattelulle hyödyntämällä jo olemassa olevia tilaresursseja.
Etsimme nyt 23.9.2024 avautuvassa avoimessa haussa ehdotuksia Nykyesityksen näyttämön kesäresidenssiin vuodelle 2026.
Nykyesityksen näyttämö toimii studio Pasilassa, joka on Helsingin Kaupunginteatterin kolmanneksi suurin näyttämö. Teatterisalissa näyttämö ja katsomo asettuvat kiinteästi vastakkain. Katsomo on 328-paikkainen ja lava n. 7 metriä syvä ja 16 metriä leveä. Kesäresidenssiin sisältyy kaksi kuukautta työskentelyaikaa kesä-heinäkuussa sekä 10 esitystä elokuussa 2026.
Etsimme ehdotuksia…
- taiteilijoita ja/tai työryhmiltä, joiden tavoitteena on tehdä kunnianhimoisia ja eteenpäinkatsovia teoksia suuremmille yleisöille
- jotka ottavat tietoisen ja selkeästi artikuloidun suhteen edustamaansa taiteenlajiin tai –lajeihin ja tarkastelevat niitä uudenlaisista näkökulmista
- joissa nykyesitys keskustelee perinteisen teatteritilan kanssa
- joissa työryhmä on valmis hyödyntämään kahden kuukauden työskentelyajan kokonaisuudessaan
- jotka ottavat huomioon, että Nykyesityksen näyttämö on Helsingin Kaupunginteatterin näyttämö: se toimii suhteessa sitä ympäröivään, kansainväliseen kaupunkiin ja sen asukkaisiin.
Painotamme valinnoissa
- Monimuotoisuutta – tämä voi tarkoittaa taiteenlajien ja estetiikkojen moninaisuutta sekä työryhmien kokemuksen, sukupuolen, kielen tai koulutustaustan moninaisuutta
- Omatoimisuutta ja ennakkosuunnittelua – residenssi tapahtuu pääasiallisesti teatterin vakituisen henkilökunnan loma-aikana
- Vastuullisuutta – kestävää tuotannon, ympäristövastuun ja työturvallisuuden huomioon ottamista. Helsingin Kaupunginteatterin tavoitteisiin on kirjattu ympäristövastuun ja työturvallisuuden aspektit.
Avoimesta hausta vastaavat Nykyesityksen näyttämön kuraattori Riikka Thitz ja syksyn 2024 vieraileva kuraattori Jani-Matti Salo.

Residenssiin ei sisälly tuotantotukea. Etsimme esityksiä, joilla on jo olemassa omarahoitus hankkeen työskentely- ja tuotantokustannuksiin tai esityksiä, jotka ollaan valmiita toteuttamaan hakemalla rahoitusta muualta.

Hakuohjeet
Avoin haku on suunnattu pääkaupunkiseudulla työskenteleville vapaan kentän ammattitaiteilijoille ja heidän muodostamilleen työryhmille.
Avoin haku tapahtuu henkilökohtaisten online-tapaamisten muodossa. Hakuun osallistuva taiteilija tai työryhmä tapaa yhden kuraattoreista ja esittelee esitysideaansa haluamallaan tavalla.
Henkilökohtaisilla tapaamisilla kuraattorit pyrkivät tarjoamaan vaihtoehdon hakuprosesseille, joissa keskeiseksi nousee se, kuinka hyvin esitysten tekijät osaavat kirjoittaa työstään. Tapaamisiin perustuva haku mahdollistaa myös hakijan ja kuraattorin välisen keskustelun jo hakuvaiheessa.
Yksittäin suoritettujen tapaamisten jälkeen kuraattorit muodostavat shortlistauksen, joka esitellään teatterin taiteelliselle johdolle. Lopullinen valinta residenssityöryhmästä pyritään tekemään vuoden 2024 loppuun mennessä.
Tapaamiset toteutetaan ajalla 14.10.–1.11.2024. Tapaamisten kesto on 45 minuuttia ja ne toteutetaan Teams-yhteyden kautta. Lisätietoja hakutapaamisesta saat ilmoittautumisen jälkeen.
Voit varata ajan tapaamiseen valitsemasi kuraattorin kanssa. Huom! Aikoja on rajoitettu määrä.
- Varauslinkit aukeavat 23.9.2024 klo 9.
- Haku on auki 6.10.2024 saakka tai niin kauan, kunnes kaikki ajat ovat varattuja.
- Kullakin kuraattorilla on 30 tapaamisaikaa, joten ilmoittautumista ei kannata jättää viime hetkeen.

Call for Applications
The Stage for Contemporary Performance, based at Studio Pasila, brings new forms of performing arts into the program of Helsinki City Theatre. The stage started as a pilot project supported by the Kone Foundation from 2021–2023, and from 2024 onwards, it has become part of the theatre’s permanent repertoire.
The Stage for Contemporary Performance does not represent just one tradition of performing arts but encourages diversity and interdisciplinary dialogue. The stage presents art that responds to the changing world, both in content and form. For independent artists, the stage offers a larger performance space and broader resources to realize their works. In the local art ecosystem, the stage is a unique space for future-oriented art. The purpose of the summer residency is to provide independent artists with space and time for artistic reflection, utilizing existing venue resources.
We are now seeking proposals for the 2026 Summer Residency at the Stage for Contemporary Performance through an open call that starts on September 23, 2024.
The Stage for Contemporary Performance is located at Studio Pasila, the third-largest stage of Helsinki City Theatre. In the theatre hall, the stage and audience are positioned directly opposite each other. The auditorium seats 328, and the stage is about 7 meters deep and 16 meters wide. The summer residency includes two months of working time in June-July, followed by 10 performances in August 2026.
We are looking for proposals…
- from artists and/or collectives aiming to create ambitious and forward-looking works for larger audiences
- that establish a conscious and clearly articulated relationship with the art form(s) they represent and explore them from new perspectives
- where contemporary performance engages with the traditional theatre space
- where the collective is ready to utilize the full two months of working time
- that take into account that the Contemporary Performance Stage is part of Helsinki City Theatre, interacting with the surrounding international city and its residents.
We emphasize the following in the selection process:
Diversity – This may refer to diversity in art forms and aesthetics, as well as the diversity of experience, gender, language, or educational background of the collectives.
Self-sufficiency and pre-planning – The residency takes place mainly during the permanent staff’s holiday period.
Responsibility – Considering sustainable production, environmental responsibility, and occupational safety. Helsinki City Theatre’s goals include aspects of environmental responsibility and safety.
The open call is managed by the curator of the Stage for Contemporary Performance, Riikka Thitz, and the guest curator for autumn 2024, Jani-Matti Salo.

- Communications and marketing as part of Helsinki City Theatre’s seasonal program
- Access to the existing technical resources of Studio Pasila. Please note that the permanent staff will not be present in June-July, so pre-planning is recommended.
- Time for discussions and collaboration with the curator of the Contemporary Performance Stage and the communications and marketing coordinator
The residency does not include production support. We are seeking proposals with their own funding in place for working and production costs or projects ready to seek funding from other sources.

Application Instructions
The open call is aimed at independent professional artists and working groups based in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
The open call will take place through personal online meetings. Participating artists or collectives will meet with one of the curators and present their project idea in the format of their choice.
The curators aim to offer an alternative to application processes that focus heavily on written project descriptions. This meeting-based process also allows for discussion between the applicant and the curator during the application stage.
After the individual meetings, the curators will create a shortlist, which will be presented to the theatre’s artistic directors. The final selection of the residency is expected by the end of 2024.
Meetings will be held between October 14–November 1, 2024. The duration of the meetings is 45 minutes, and they will be conducted via Teams. More details about the meetings will be provided after registration.

- Booking links will open on September 23, 2024, at 9 AM.
- The application process is open until October 6, 2024, or until all meeting slots are filled.
- Each curator has 30 meeting slots, so it’s advisable to book early.
