Groundhog Day in English

How would you spend a day that you knew would repeat itself over and over again?

Despite his protests, the self-centered weatherman Phil Connors is sent to a remote village to report on a traditional event, Groundhog Day. Something happens, and to his horror, Phil realizes that he wakes up again and again the same morning. The days are the same, the same annoying people always come across: an over-happy hotel guest, a hostess pushing coffee, an old man begging for money, a greedy insurance salesman. But there is also an advantage to knowing what will happen in advance – you can steal without worrying about getting caught, you know which catchphrases work, you can live wide and go wild as much as you like.

Living in a loop may feel fun for a while, when actions have no consequences, and in the morning everything is the same and starts again. How can you benefit from the situation yourself, or could it also help others? Over the course of repeated days, Phil has time to get to know the inhabitants of the small town, especially his new colleague, TV producer Rita Hanson. What all has to happen before Phil is ready to wake up to a new morning?

Does Phil learn to appreciate life? Is an egotistical workaholic able to broaden their outlook on life and take into account the surrounding reality? Can every day be new and worth living?

The cult film Groundhog Day, which has risen to cult status and is listed as one of the best films in the world, premiered as a musical in London in 2016 and was an immediate success. The musical arrived on Broadway the following year, and now it’s time to conquer Helsinki. The director is Finland’s true musical comet Samuel Harjanne – the man behind the City Theatre’s previous mega-hits Kinky Boots and The Little Mermaid.

My Day as a Groundhog is a musical comedy that you want to see again and again and again and again.

Keltaiseen talvitakkiin pukeutunut nainen seisoo pukumiehen vieressä, joka pitelee kelloa, jonka sisällä on pieni ihminen. Mies osoittaa kelloa, ja hänen olkapäällään istuu pieni murmeli. Molemmat vaikuttavat yllättyneiltä.

Pukuun ja vaaleanpunaiseen solmioon pukeutunut mies osoittaa kädessään olevaa suurta herätyskelloa hämmästynyt ilme kasvoillaan. Kello näyttää kello 7:05. Taustalla on pelkkä valkoinen.

Punaliivinen ja silinterihattuinen mies seisoo kädet ylhäällä korokkeen takana, jossa lukee PHIL, ja häntä reunustaa kaksi tummiin takkeihin ja hattuihin pukeutunutta miestä, kun väkijoukko hurraa-huutoja juhlallisessa, koristellussa ulkoilmatilassa.

Henkilö istuu sängyssä kuvioidun peiton alla hämärässä, ullakkotyylisessä makuuhuoneessa, jossa on vinoja puupalkkeja, pitsiverhot ja lämmin valo, joka luo viihtyisän yöllisen maiseman.

Kolme miestä istuu värikkäillä valonjohdoilla ja pulloilla koristellun maalaismaisen baaritiskin takana, ja heidän takanaan seinällä on neon-olutkylttejä ja tikkataulu, jotka luovat lavalle vilkkaan kapakkatunnelman.

Kaksi ihmistä nauttii juomia baarissa; toinen istuu jakkaralla nostellen lasia, toinen seisoo pitkässä takissa. Liiviin pukeutunut baarimikko lukee ruokalistaa baaritiskin takana. Tunnelma vaikuttaa vilkkaalta ja teatraaliselta.

Kaksi näyttelijää seisoo teatterin lavalla olevan ruokalan edessä; toisella on keltainen takki ja vaaleanpunainen hattu, toisella tumma takki ja vaaleanpunainen solmio. Taustalla istuu ihmisiä kopissa, ja näkyvissä on värikästä, omituista rekvisiittaa.

Mies ja nainen istuvat sängyllä viihtyisässä, maalaismaisessa huoneessa, jossa on puukatto, vintage-tapetti ja kehystettyjä kuvia. Nainen istuu peiton alla hymyillen, kun taas mies istuu sängyn juurella.

Ryhmä talvivaatteisiin pukeutuneita näyttelijöitä esiintyy kirkkaasti valaistulla näyttämöllä, jonka taustalla on luminen kylä, jossa on värikkäitä pukuja, taloja ja suuri kaarirakenne sinisten näyttämövalojen alla.

Lavalla esiintyy neljä näyttelijää. Yhdellä on puku kädessään laukku ja kahvia, kahdella on samanlaiset talvihatut ja värikkäät lumipuvut, ja yhdellä on vihreä villapaita ja hame keittiökalustolla. Heidän takanaan on Welcome to Punxsutawney -kyltti.

Pukumies puhuu mikrofoniin kirkkaasti valaistulla lavalla, jota ympäröivät värikkäisiin pukuihin ja talvivaatteisiin pukeutuneet ihmiset. Taustalla näkyy omituisia taloja ja juhlavia koristeita. Kameraryhmä kuvaa kohtausta.

Kirkkaasti valaistussa näyttämöllä nähdään talvivaatteisiin pukeutuneita näyttelijöitä retrokuppilan lavasteissa, joissa on koppeja, baaritiski ja luminen lattia, mikä viittaa vilkkaaseen keskusteluun hahmojen välillä.

Ryhmä värikkäisiin pukuihin pukeutuneita näyttelijöitä esiintyy lavasteissa, jotka muistuttavat omituista yöllistä kaupunkia, jossa on hehkuvia ikkunoita ja kaarevia rakenteita dramaattisessa sinisessä valaistuksessa.

Näyttelijät lumista kaupunkiaukiota muistuttavalla värikkäällä lavasteella talvivaatteet yllään. Yksi mies puvussa ja punaisessa solmiossa seisoo näyttämön keskellä, kun muut ovat vuorovaikutuksessa hänen ympärillään. Taustan muodostavat sarjakuvamaiset kaupungin rakennukset.

Kaksi näyttelijää esiintyy näyttämöllä valokeilan alla; toinen, esiliinaan ja mekkoon pukeutunut näyttelijä pitelee pitkää keppiä ja hymyilee, kun taas toinen, tummiin vaatteisiin pukeutunut näyttelijä elehtii dramaattisesti käsillään.

Keltaiseen takkiin pukeutunut nainen seisoo kuppilan tiskin vasemmalla puolella, kun turkisturkkinen mies puhuu hänelle. Tiskin takana työskentelee tarjoilija. Kaksi miestä istuu yhdessä oikealla tiskillä. Kohtaus on lavalla, jonka yläpuolella on ruokalista.

Iloinen silinterihattuinen mies istuu lattialla baaritiskin edessä, kun taas hymyilevä nainen istuu jakkaralla ja baarimikko seisoo tiskin takana, ja kaikki tämä tapahtuu värikkäässä valaistussa teatterimaailmassa.

Kaksi näyttelijää esiintyy näyttämöllä värikkään kotitekoisen karkkikärryn edessä, jossa on juhlavalot ja talvimaisemat. Toisella on puku ja solmio, toisella keltainen takki ja vaaleanpunainen hattu. Taustalla kulkee ohi toinen ruudullinen näyttelijä.

Lumisen kaupunkiaukion näköisessä lavastuksessa talvivaatteisiin pukeutuneet näyttelijät ovat kokoontuneet puisen korokkeen ympärille, ja taustalla on rakennuksia ja lyhtypylväitä sinisen taivaan alla, jossa on lumihiutaleita.

Ryhmä talvivaatteisiin pukeutuneita ihmisiä seisoo värikkäiden, juhlallisten valojen alla lavalla, jonka taustalla on lumisia kaupunkirakennuksia, joita valonheittimet valaisevat ja luovat iloisen lomatunnelman.

Ryhmä värikkäisiin talvivaatteisiin pukeutuneita esiintyjiä tanssii tarmokkaasti jäähallilla potkien jalkojaan korkealle. Lavatausta muistuttaa lumisia rakennuksia ja juhlavia talvisin koristeita kirkkaiden lavavalojen alla.

Sinisellä taustalla on eläväinen näyttämöesitys, jossa keskellä näyttämöä on siniseen mekkoon pukeutunut nainen ja tummiin vaatteisiin pukeutunut mies. Värikkäisiin pukuihin pukeutuneet tanssijat poseeraavat energisesti heidän ympärillään kaarevien jousivalojen alla.

Vilkkaassa näyttämökuvassa ihmiset tanssivat ja seurustelevat värikkäiden valojen, juhlallisten koristeiden ja kaupunkitaustan alla. Jotkut seisovat korokkeella, kun taas toiset tanssivat lattialla värikkäissä puvuissa.

Suuri joukko näyttelijöitä näyttämöllä sinisten valonheittimien alla, osa heistä on pukeutunut talvivaatteisiin. Taustalla on suuri kaari ja tähtimäisiä valoja, jotka luovat yöllisen ulkoilmatunnelman.

Mies ja nainen istuvat lähekkäin peiton alla hämärässä, vanhanaikaisessa huoneessa; nainen painaa päänsä miehen olkapäälle, kun tämä katsoo ylöspäin pitsiverhojen peittämästä ikkunasta tulevan sinisen valon valaisemana.

Suuri, vilkas joukko värikkäisiin talviasuihin pukeutuneita esiintyjiä poseeraa lavalla iloisin ilmein ja pitää kädessään kylttejä, joissa lukee

Uutistoimittaja seisoo mikrofonin kanssa kameraryhmän edessä värikkäällä teatterilavalla, kun taas puvutetut esiintyjät tanssivat ja poseeraavat hänen takanaan vilkkaassa, lumi-aiheisessa kaupunkitaustassa.

Kolme viktoriaanisen ajan pukuihin ja silinterihattuihin pukeutunutta miestä seisoo lavalla sinisessä valaistuksessa ja laulaa. Heillä on tummat takit, joissa on keltaiset ja punaiset solmukkeet, ja taustalla on dramaattinen kaupunkiympäristö ja hehkuvat ikkunat.

Pukuun pukeutunutta miestä vedetään koukulla, jota pitää hattu päässään karhupukuun pukeutunut henkilö, kun taas muut värikkäisiin pukuihin pukeutuneet esiintyjät poseeraavat ja tanssivat dramaattisen punaisen ja sinisen näyttämövalaistuksen alla.

Mustaan kukkapaitaan ja farkkuihin pukeutunut kalju mies puhuu lavalla mikrofoniin ja elehtii yhdellä kädellään. Taustalla on hämärä keltainen ovi ja kyltti, jossa lukee Suljettu.

Ajeltu henkilö pitää mikrofonia ja elehtii yhdellä kädellä puhuessaan lavalla. Hänellä on yllään musta paita, jossa on valkoinen kukkakuvio. Taustalla näkyy kyltti, jossa lukee Sorry, CLOSED.

How did the musical come about?

Interview with Danny Rubin (DR), the screenwriter of the musical My Day as a Groundhog, and Tim Minchin (TM), who is responsible for the music and lyrics.  Where did you get the idea to make My Day as a Groundhog musical? DR: I've been writing songs and playing guitar since I was a teenager and I've listened to a wide range of things: from folk and rock to chamber music and Broadway musicals. As my career turned to screenwriting, I was looking for ways to sustain music in my life and even worked on a few musical film projects. After the release of My Day as a Groundhog, I knew I had no interest in writing a sequel - for me, My Day as a Groundhog was already a sequel in itself, which made an actual sequel unnecessary. On the other hand, however, I knew that the story would be very rich in themes, and if I had the opportunity to return to the material, I would only do it once and with a different art form than film. I considered writing My Day as a Groundhog novel (each chapter is a chapter 1); television series (the sets and characters are the same in each episode, as is customary in half-hour television comedy series), but by far my best choice was a theatre musical. I realized that the musical narrative gives the story the freedom to include repetition, themes and variations, twists and synchronisations - all musical means that fit perfectly with the groundhog of my day. Even the broad themes of Phil's journey — his changing mind, appearance, and civilization — can be reflected in evolving musical styles. All of this sounded like a great way to get back to the story, and I thought it would be fun. Which it was.    What kind of relationship did you have with My Groundhog Day before composing the musical? TM: I had seen the movie more than once, and I loved it... But I wasn't a fan through and through. And actually, "film-to-stage" adaptations are generally not my thing. In any case, my day as a groundhog was a great starting point, which had an unusual structure and I always trusted that it could carry on stage. What kind of challenges were there in bringing the story to the stage?   DR: Less than I thought. For example, the film is largely built on montage - short scenes edited together, which allows jumps back and forth in time and space. But how on stage could Phil fall off the clock tower and get out of bed in the next scene? Director Matthew Warchus instructed me that anything I could dream of, I could do on stage. We were able to execute innovative and surprising stage magic in our original stage version, such as an impossible chase scene. I found that my previous years of experience as a screenwriter had prepared me for this endless rewriting and refining of scenes, so my personal challenge: the musical I hesitated to do turned out to be a wonderful experience. One of the expected challenges was easily solved: does the story take place in 1993 or in the present day, as in the film? I wanted it to be set in the present and the only real challenge, the elephant in the room, was that there were no cell phones or wireless networks in 1993. Today, in the event of a sudden weather event, everyone would check their phones and Phil Connors could call anyone or spend his days surfing the internet, which would greatly reduce the feeling of being trapped. Luckily for me, phone and data connections can plausibly be interrupted due to a snowstorm, so this is what happened. I would say that the biggest challenges from the film to the stage are related to the character of Phil Connors. For the majority of the audience, Phil Connors is Bill Murray. In order for My Day as a Groundhog to work in any artistic form, we have to want to go on a trip with the clearly unsympathetic Phil. Bill Murray has a unique ability to be mean and loved at the same time, so he hit the spot in the film. On the other hand, his style in the film is very laconic and expressionless, he is not a man who bursts into song. We could have recreated a Bill Murray-type character who might be too cynical to sing, but at the breaking point, his natural voice would come out. Not a horrible idea, but would mean a musical in which the protagonist only sings at the end. So, in the end, it was better to free the audience from thinking of Bill Murray as Phil and look for new ways to create a nasty person who credibly bursts into song, with whom we are happy to make this long journey.

History and festivities of Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day has a long tradition in the United States. The first American mention and a detailed description of the relationship between the groundhog's shadow and the arrival of spring can be found in the diaries of James Morris, a merchant from Pennsylvania, dating back to 1841.     The Groundhog Day celebration, which is still celebrated today, has been celebrated in the small village of Punxsutawney since 1887.  The originator and father of the tradition of Groundhog Day is considered  to be Clymer Freas (1867–1942), a journalist for a local newspaper inPunxsutawney. The tradition is said to have   spreadfrom Punxsutawney around the United States and Canada, where Groundhog Day is celebrated annually on February 2. Groundhog Day is considered to stem from a Christian tradition that emerged during the Roman Empire, Candlemas Day. According to the Bible, Mary brought Jesus to the temple at the age of 40 days, and Simeon identified him as the prophesied messiah. The name of the day dates back to the Middle Ages, when candles to be burned in the church during the year were consecrated on that day. Candlemas is associated with the beginning of a brighter time. February 2 is also a significant celebration in Celtic folklore, when the Imbolc festival is celebrated. Imbolc is a celebration of the dawn of spring, when a new beginning and fertility are celebrated. The tradition is associated with the Irish goddess Brigit, the protector of women giving birth. The tradition of seeing one's own shadow, on the other hand, comes from Germany, where the shadow of badgers and other small mammals has been used to predict the beginning of spring.   What happens on Groundhog Day? The celebrationin Punxsutawney, which   has a population of less than 6,000, is huge; up to 40,000 people gather in Gobler's Knob Parkon the outskirts of the small town before sunrise. During the ceremony, a group of men dressed in shaket clothes lift a marmot named Phil out of a hole made for it, and if Phil sees his shadow on a bright day, he will return to hibernation and the winter will continue for another six weeks. But if the day is cloudy and there is no shadow, spring is declared to arrive early that year.     The festivities include speeches, live music and various performances from storytelling to comedy, magic and traditional crafts. The numerous food stalls in the festival area take care of the nutrition of the guests. When I heard that the film My Day as a Groundhog has been made into a musical that will be directed by Samuel Harjanne in the Helsinki City Theatre’s repertoire, I thought that Harjanne must have taken a bad bite out of it. After all, a film like this, where one day repeats itself the same over and over again with small changes, cannot work on stage and as a musical. Woe to Thomas, who doubts me! Of course, it can work, and especially when it is run by Harjanne, one of the best musicals in our country, who has gained international fame.

Helsinki City Theatre’s My Day as a Groundhog was a joyful encounter on a dark autumn evening. The visit was my first visit to the Helsinki City Theatre since the premiere of Humming Ridge last winter. While the last time the foyer was full of people, this time in the weekday evening show and in the auditorium, which was thinned out by safety distances, the foyers felt huge and even a little deserted, even there was no need to queue for the women’s restroom. The desertedness of the foyer is also explained by the fact that the audience has been reserved a much longer time than usual to move to the auditorium, in order to keep audience contacts to a minimum and avoid congestion on the passageways. I got a ticket to the performance from the theatre.
