Våldets historia is a moving story about class divisions, violence and the narrow confines of masculinity. The play is based on acclaimed novels by French author Édouard Louis: En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule and Histoire de la violence.
The first act portrays Eddy’s childhood in a small town in northern France, where his life is marked by his family’s poverty and relentless bullying. The second act explores the sexual violence he experiences as an adult and his subsequent recovery. Despite the brutality at the heart of Louis’ novels, the production uses the means of theatre to approach these difficult themes with sensitivity and nuance. Director Jakob Höglund is known for his choreographic and musical stage language, which he seeks to develop further in this work. The original music is composed by Elia Lombardini.
Édouard Louis wrote his debut novel at the age of 21, and it quickly became a hit with audiences and critics alike in France. His works have been translated into dozens of languages, and stage adaptations have been performed around the world.
This is the first time Louis’ work has been staged in Finland.
Våldets historia is part of Svenska Kulturfonden’s project Världen på scenen, which supports the translation and staging of international drama in Finnish theatres.
