Enchanting dystopian dance Blackness in endless infinity, both seductive and frightening. It is as if all colour has been stripped away in Kenneth Kvarnström’s dystopian world Destruction Song II. The public hardly find their seats before they are surprised by an ear-splitting sound shock. Three faceless, black masked angels of death take the stage in a world where black ash covers the ground and a shiny dark light falls softly on hanging metal prisms. The only glimpse of a human presence is the dancers’ naked flickering figures that, like the chirping of birds, witness life amid the enveloping deadly blackness. At the start, the timing is somewhat uneven between the dancers Kenneth Bruun Carlson, Jenni-Elina Lehto, and Valtteri Raekallio, but they quickly find a common rhythm and dance with certainty and expressively both in unison as well as when the choreography cleaves into duets and solos. In Janne Marja-aho’s following expressive solo, the naked back is in focus. He is alone and desperate, a survivor after a catastrophe. The black is broken and light floods in through an opening at the back of the stage. The dancers dressed in black resemble their own silhouettes against the light and move at an increasingly accelerating tempo. The rhythm is like a pulsating heart and, in the dance’s seamless waves of movement, it appears as if one single organism is moving – billowing, powerful, and meticulous. Kvarnström’s brilliant body language with interesting details, and the intensive meeting that dissolves in slow meditative frequencies, make it all hypnotically intensive. The pressure increases and one feels an approaching explosion. Nevertheless, after chaos arrives, order and the rumbling music is replaced by an acoustic guitar solo from which humanity emerges. Marja-aho and Sofia Karlsson, who also danced in the original version 2008, unite in a final duet in a strangely beautiful farewell. Karlsson remains and is united with the angels of death. Jukka Rintamäki’s minimalist, electronic sound world and the scenographer Jens Sethzman’s stripped aesthetic perfect Destruction Song II into an incomparably excellent interplay, where the whole seduces and all one wants is to remain seated and to be absorbed by the beauty and melancholy. It is alleged sometimes that it is difficult for the uninitiated to understand modern dance. However, you do not need to understand Destruction Song II – just enjoy.

Näin kävi Kenneth Kvarnströmille hänen ryhtyessään tekemään kahden vuoden takaista kolmelle tanssijalle tehtyä Destruction Song –teostaan Helsingin kaupunginteatterin tanssiryhmän viidelle tanssijalle. Kahden naisen ja yhden miehen esityksestä piti tulla uusi versio neljälle miehelle ja yhdelle naiselle.

Lue lisääTUHON JÄLKEEN MAAILMA ON MUSTA Mustanpuhuva Destruction song II sykähdyttää tanssilla ja tunnelmilla. Helsingin Kaupunginteatterin tanssiryhmän taiteellinen johtaja Kenneth Kvarnström luo liikkeen katkeamatonta janaa syvään mustaan maailmaan. Koreografi panee tanssijat todella tanssimaan, tasainen liike soljuu läpi tunnin mittaisen esityksen. Liikemateriaali on jälleen selkeää ja monille tutuksi tullutta Kvarnströmiä. Aluksi on tyhjyys ja kumiseva tuhon ääni. Mustaan kietoutuva näyttämö on kuin maailmanlopun jälkeen. Shokki tekee ihmisistä kuoria, peräti niin, että myös kasvot on peitetty mustaan. Vähitellen he kuoriutuvat vaatteistaan, huomaavat toisensa, ryhtyvät johonkin, työhön, elämään. Lopuksi tulee laulu, mukanaan hellyyttä, voimaa ja myös itsekkyyttä. Pitkään neljä tanssijaa tanssii tiiviinä ryhmänä samoja liikesarjoja. Rintamasuunta on paljolti suoraan eteenpäin. He eivät näe toisiaan eivätkä tunnu katsovan yleisöäänkään, vieraannuttaminen on totaalista. He tanssivat elastista liikettä tyhjinä kuorina. Jukka Rintamäen elektroninen musiikki on valtavaa, se vyöryy yli ja jymisee. Volyymi ei riko korvia, vaan valtavuus on kuin Hornetien lentäessä kaupungin yli. Rytmiä ei ensi kuulemalta erota, ja tuntuu ihmeeltä, ettäKenneth Bruun Carlson, Jenni-Elina Lehto, Janne Marja-aho ja Valtteri Raekallio kykenevät liikkeiden täydelliseen samanaikaisuuteen. Lattian peittää musta muovisilppu, joka lentää jalkojen alta ja liikkeen voimasta. Jens Sethzmanin lavastus muuttaa muotoaan, tanssijoiden liikkuessa lattiaan muodostuu jatkuvasti uusia kuvioita. Valo tulee kaistaleena sivusta, välillä kaistale aukeaa taustafondiin ja tanssijoista tulee varjokuvia. Jylinä vaimenee lopulta ja rytmikäs pauke alkaa. Toisessa osassa tanssijat katsovat toisiaan ja toisiinsa, inhimillisyys pilkahtaa heidän silmissään. Samalla nähdään Kenneth Kvarnströmin tavaramerkkiä, ryhmän taitavaa kuljetusta. Uutta voimaa lupaava lopun duetto on teoksen laulu. Sen tulkitsivat ensi-illassa Janne Marja-aho ja Sofia Karlsson, jotka tanssivat jo Destruction song -teoksen ensimmäisessä trio -versiossa vuonna 2008. Kolmas tanssija tuolloin oli Cilla Olsen. Duetossa pari tanssii yhdessä, toinen toistaan manipuloiden. Hellyys pilkahtaa liikkeissä, mutta ehkä suhteesta itselle saatu hyöty on kuitenkin tärkeintä. Silti laulu antaa lohtua, siihen viittaa myös Rintamäen musiikki, joka vaihtuu yksinäisen kitaran herkkään näppäilyyn. Teoksen lähtökohtana on ollut musta väri ja sen variointi. Ruotsalainen pukusuunnittelija Helena Hörstedt on pukenut tanssijoiden mustien perusasujen päälle erilaisia mustia nauhoja kuin lakunarua. Kaulassa roikkuu lakuspiraalia, paita tuo mieleen aikoinaan Ruotsiin matkaavilta laivoilta ostetut Snöre – lakritsinauhat. Puvustus toimii hyvin, kankaat elävät tanssin mukana ja värejäkin kokomustista yllättävästi löytyy. Kuusihenkisessä tanssiryhmässä on ollut epäonnisia loukkaantumisia. Ensi-illassa tanssijoita oli varsinaisesti neljä, käsiohjelmassa mainitsematon Sofia Karlsson viidentenä. Tulevissa esityksissä kompositio voi olla joku toinen. Vaihtelevan tanssijamäärän teos onnistui kuitenkin ensi-illassa näyttämään valmiilta. Tanssijoiden taito sekä musiikin, lavastuksen ja puvustuksen yhteen hiileen puhaltaminen Kvarnströmin varman koreografisen osaamisen kanssa välittävät lohdullisen tarinan selviämisestä.
