Helsinki City Theatre will reopen its doors to the public after a long wait. Instead of the opening ceremony, the autumn programme will be presented in the video Coffee with the Theatre Director, which will be released on 18 August.
The long wait will be rewarded when the fast-paced musical play Tatu and Patu for the whole family in Helsinki finally premieres on the big stage on 7 September.
From 25 August, the main roles in the comedic Hound of the Baskervilles on the Arena stage will be played by virtuoso veteran actors, Santeri Kinnunen as Sherlock Holmes and Risto Kaskilahti and Eppu Salminen as Dr. Watson, who will replace the role of Watson in some of the performances and perform at the premiere. The other 34 roles in the play are handled with super-fast role changes by just three actors.
The Security Man, written and directed by Pasi Lampela, will premiere on 7 October on the Arena stage. The roles of the new Finnish comedy are played by Martti Suosalo and Katja Küttner.
The Finnish premieres of two strong dramas will be seen on the small stage: on 2 September, Bolla directed by Milja Sarkola, starring Samuli Niittymäki, Jessica Grabowky and Mikko Kauppila, and on 30 September, starring three veteran actors, Jukka-Pekka Palo, Jaana Saarinen and Aino Seppo.Lucy Kirkwood’s children.
Gravity, which premieres on the small stage on 11 November, takes the viewer deep into the world of dance by combining different contemporary dance techniques with acrobatics and martial arts. The performance, produced in collaboration between Helsinki Dance Company and Kinetic Orchestra, continues the continuum of choreographer Jarkko Mandelin’s extremely physical and movement-focused works with eight dancers. Jarkko Mandelin is the first choreographer invited by Antti Lahti, who started as the leader of the dance company in October 2020, to Helsinki Dance Company.
Studio Pasila’s new Finnish comedy novelty, Mikko Reitala’s Paahtimo, insightfully tackles current phenomena in working life under the direction of Sini Pesonen from 8 September.
In December, Studio Pasila will premiere a new musical play Saiturin joulu, written and directed by Heikki Sankari based on the Charles Dickens classic and composed by Tuomas Kesälä. Helsinki City Theatre’s New Theatre for Children and Youth Shed offers a guaranteed Christmas spirit and is a touching reminder of the importance of Christmas, the power of cooperation and love.
Lilla Teatern’s autumn will open with Anna Takanen’s fine Sörjen som blev on 1 September. Lillan Teatern’s autumn season continues with Paavo Westerberg’s stage adaptation of the award-winning novel Den besynnerliga eventn med hunden om natten from 2 October.
To the repertoire, audience favourites Colonel, starring Heidi Herala, and the foyer performance Twelve Gifts for Santa Claus, aimed at the youngest members of the family, will return to the repertoire. The stand-up club Club act!one and the record-breaking all-time favourite Kivi taskussa will continue in Studio Pasila. To the repertoire, Saikkua, thank you! PART 3 and the musical directed by Jakob Höglund at Once Lilla Teatern.
In addition, the Arena stage will feature interesting guest performances during the autumn: Stella Polaris’ TULPPA IRTI – Improv’s mega-farce, the award-winning mentalist’s visit Pete Poskiparta – Mentalist 3.0 and Seela Sella and Esko Roine’s Love letters.
Instead of the opening event of the autumn season, the Helsinki City Theatre will celebrate the opening of the 2021–2022 performance year on 18 August with a video published on HKT’s YouTube channel. The video presenting the autumn season’s programme shows greetings from the autumn 2021 premieres, and theatre director Kari Arffman, actors Heidi Herala, Aino Seppo and Eija Vilpas discuss the autumn programme with the popular Kahvilla kirjailija – events.
